The A - Z of ITFC Players 22:17 - Jan 13 with 1126 viewssolemio

I have gone through the alphabet choosing one player for each surname initial whom I consider to be the best for that letter.

Dalian Atkinson
Kevin Beattie
Ray Crawford
Kieron Dyer
John Elsworthy
Craig Forrest
Eric Gates
Alan Hunter
or Matt Holland
Ivar Ingimarsson
David Johnson 1 or 2
Chris Kiwomya
Jimmy Leadbetter
Mick Mills
or Paul Mariner
Andy Nelson
Russell Osman
Ted Phillips
Alan Quinn
Martijn Reuser
Mick Stockwell
Trans Thijssen
Gus Uhlenbeek (OK, Gav?)
Colin Viljoen
John Wark
?
Frank Yallop
Romeo Zondervan

As you can see I just could not decide for letters H, J & M.

No loan players allowed.

Or maybe Frans Thijssen.

Some pretty incontestable choices there. I'd query Reuser for the R even though he was a bit of a cult he wasn't always first choice and didn't make too many apps. So, on that basis, though I never saw either of them play, by reputation and longevity, I'd go for Billy Reed or Doug Rees. And much as I liked Holland, there's no choice when it comes to Big Al.

Ingimarrson and Quinn stand out a bit.

I take it they’re the only eligible players with them letters?

My hobbies include being quiet during trips, clapping with songs, and diabetes.

If it helps, Quinn was much underrated. A bit of grafter and battler who could, when the mood took him, actually pass a bit.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

Or maybe Derrick Rees… who scored 29 goals in 90 games between 1957-61?

Iorfa ahead of Ingi perhaps? Pretty terrible choice to have to make mind you!

Ah, just realised you said no loans...

I can help you considerably with H and J. Allan Hunter was a club great who raised the club from relegation contenders to one of the best clubs in Europe. Holland was an OK player who clapped a lot and the refused a club saving transfer so he could feather his own nest with a ‘free’ to Charlton David Johnson similarly transformed the club and performed for the club with distinction at home and in Europe - allegedly giving a testicle for the cause. DJ2 merely got some goals for a year or two in the second division - and befuddled Burley’s mind with a Stewart/Johnson conundrum. How about eX- players for X?

Yes, you're right, although Reuser did have one good game against Southampton!!

Reuser. Premiership. That's all is needed to make ten case for him

This listing is harsh on Terry Butcher, Arnold Muhren, Clive Woods and Trevor Whymark but I have to accept the choices you have made there. Could Darren Ambrose challenge Dalian for the 'A' position?

I agree on the first 4, but I would definitely have Atkinson over Ambrose, personally.

Whenever Atkinson got on the ball, you could absolutely feel the anticipation and sense of excitement in the crowd, that something magical could be about to happen. Ambrose, good as he was, never had that same effect. It was a travesty that Dalian was allowed to leave so cheaply, only to move on from Sheffield Wednesday a year later for a massive profit.
