Flynn Downes - apparently is absolutely ripping it up at Swansea, and been brilliant - the Swans fan who messaged me was to see do we have a good sell on as they'll struggle to keep him past the summer.
I hope/presume we do have a sell on, and hopefully can see a decent chunk of any profits. I always thought a smaller PL side buying him and then loaning him to a Champ side was an absolute no brainer like Brighton have done with Matt Clarke. At £1.5m was such a low risk move but hopefully this route helps us benefit more financially
Teddy Bishop - apparently due to covid and injury crisis at Lincoln they have had to move full backs to centre back, and Teddy has been playing at right back for them! I can't say I've ever seen him play there even at any youth level even for a minute.....I'd be surprised if his body holds up to that and just had a look and sounds as though may be the case:
The midfielder-turned-right-back has been struggling with a groin issue which saw him taken off in the games against Sunderland and Cambridge.
It is a long-standing problem which may require him to come out of the side for a period soon.
Speaking ahead of the game at Rotherham, Appleton said: "He's going to be 50/50 for tomorrow. He's had the issue for a while. We don't expect him to be out for a long time but if we don't address it at some point, that might be the case.
"We'll be guided by him and the medical team. At some point he's going to have to miss a game or two. Hopefully we can somehow get him to the Plymouth game on Saturday when we know we've got a full week [without a midweek game]."
Downes is absolutely class, their fans have been raving about him. Will go on to play in the premier league, can see him signing for his boyhood club WHU.
Unfortunately he wanted to leave though so the correct decision to let him go still

The correct decision was not to sit back and let the club be relegated in 2019, then we wouldn’t have had to sell! But Evans wasn’t willing to invest in keeping us up, instead we got a injured bargain bin Judge, Keane and Colin Quaner.

The correct decision would have been using the same powers of persuasion (and finances) that persuaded likes of Chaplin, Celina, Morsy and Walton to play in League 1 rather than just help usher them out the door after throwing him and all his mates under the bus
I think the title of the post is a bit narrative driven.
Downes was not let go, he wanted to leave and had done for a few seasons.
Surely time to look forwards under a new and exciting era than continually dragging up the past, especially if it's with what looks like an agenda driven narrative.

In hindsight, maybe, but we weren't there. Paul Cook sat down with every player (as we know), may well have been that Downes was adamant in leaving and Cook wanted players fully committed.
He's so much better than league 1 anyway. He knew that.

I went to the Lincoln v Cambridge game as my son supports them. Bishop looked ok at full back. He wasn't really pushed though by any winger. And he managed to get forward a bit. he doesn't look a world beater though. Maybe his old injuries have held him back. He looks a yard short of pace and physically a little light still.
Jack Lancaster was on the bench for Cambridge and never even made it on the pitch.
As an aside a group of Cambridge fans were really in your face and abusive as the Lincoln fans were leaving. So they've joined my dislike list.

What about Gibbs?
He was on the bench for Norwich in PL last week for the midweek game, I don't know how many they had out for Covid etc, but must be doing well to be in a matchday squad

Chaplin & Celina have both featured in less than half of Town's league games. So was getting them that big a coup?

You have to judge decisions with where they were at the time, not in hindsight - both were clearly big coups and expensive
Celina is a hugely talented player for this level. Unsurprisingly only a loan, but you can get above average quality by doing that. However, if you wave money around in the 3rd tier, you largely pay over the odds for average players. If they were much better, they wouldn't be playing in the 3rd tier. I'm not seeing many players in Town's expensively recruited squad who look anything special. The real skill is moulding those players into an effective team.

The thing is, Downes wanted to go, and we needed to sell to be able to get players in.
If we had persuaded Downes to stay, which personally I don't think was a possibility, we would not have had the monies to purchase players.
The fee received for Downes (approx. £1.5m) equates to roughly what we paid on Morsy, Chaplin, Harper & Burns.
Downes is a great player, and I would have loved him here as part of the new squad, but not sure we could have kept him as well as get the players we did and have kept within the financial limits set out for League 1.

If we had a savvy CEO and recruitment team at the time, Downes would have been sold the year before at a decent price with a replacement in mind. Don’t blame Downes for wanting to further his career and we should encourage it to an extent. That’s football and keeping the best youngsters too long could mean we clip their wings and we end up receiving less money if their form/ potential plateaus. What did we get for Bishop - 225k? There was talk of PL clubs offering millions for him a few years before. Big clubs pay extra for early potential and maybe we need to take advantage if we get similar offers.

Classy goal from Downes at the weekend:
That's the first time I've seen him get forward for the Swans. They normally have him sitting very deep (he's even played as the holding CB in a back 3 a couple of times).
They're keeping things really simple with him - his normal role is to break up play and give it to the nearest player. It's working for him too. He does look v good.

Town's squad management has been utterly disastrous under the Evans regime. Yes, everyone signs a few duds, but we signed umpteen duds (or allowed Keane especially to do so). We also seem to have been a pretty poor seller (Wickham excepted) e.g. we turned down a bid of over £5m for McGoldrick & let him go for free after a couple of unproductive seasons. We could have sold Jackson for over £1m 18 months ago but we kept him even though he didn't fit into the manager's system & he's also going for free after 2 unproductive years. The common factor is Evans & a lack of a football strategy. Let's hope the new owners have some better system, but after letting Cook dismantle the squad & recruit 19 players, I have my doubts.
