Seems an entirely pointless move on his part? Likely to cost him his seat surely?

Maybe, but it makes a very loud point.

Appears to be putting constituents before party (for now anyway)

Bury South has a Tory majority of 402. If he wants to stick the boot into Johnson and the Tories, surely he’ll stand for Labour in a by election. I imagine he’d easily win.

Not really. It's an act of self preservation.

The seat would have most likely reverted back to Labour at the next election. He'll nowe be the Labour candidate in 2024.

Bury South has a Tory majority of 400 so was likely to go back to Labour next time anyway.

That's what normally happens. There were a couple who went under Blair.

One, whose name escapes me, became a New Labour Minister.

Absolutely not, only way to keep his seat - it's a traditional labour seat, and he had a tiny majority. There also may be others who see this as the only way to keep their job.

Because he'd already put a letter in to the 1922, think it does mean that there needs to be one more letter in.

Woodward. That's the fella I was thinking of. Alan Howarth was the other. Although he moved seat.

Oswald Mosley was the first Tory to defect to Labour.

Maybe he's got scruples? Hard to imagine from one of the 2019 intake, but you never know!

Seems a very strange move though. I know there is a history of people crossing the floor, but the parties are miles apart currently (although Corbynites would disagree, I'm sure).

He is the one who walked up to Owen Patterson in the Commons and publicly called him a c**t, so maybe not a bad judge.

Except that he's moved because they DON'T think the same about everything. The Tories are more interested in the cult of personality, culture wars and feathering their own nest, Labour appear at least to be interested in what happens to the country.

Just stick to quoting terorrists to look edgy, you're not clever enough for the 'contratrion' level of 'edgy'.

Certainly one of the loudest and I don’t really pay much attention to her.

But she’s right here. Going from a Conservative MP given their record to a Labour MP is problematic. And if people don’t see that, that in itself shows how used we are to the UK’s enormous democratic deficit.

It's a tricky one with the voting record etc.,

Having been part of the 2019 intake and keen to make a name for himself, no doubt he'll have voted as he has been told to and, no doubt, he'll be doing his best to follow the Labour whip for the time being as well. He certainly wouldn't want to rub anyone up the wrong way and face deselection when the next GE comes around.

And therein lies the problem - most inexperienced MPs are more concerned with staying onside with their leadership than following their own convictions, and will therefore vote whichever way they're told to vote.

Short and to the point. Whether it is as devestating only time will tell. But he is highly respected, a classic man in a grey suit.
