Can players we signed or that came through the yoof set up who never did it despite our no doubt completely fair and reasonable expectations to the contrary ...
For me Luca Civelli, was super excited by him Big Jim was finding his feet as manager and Luca was exotic, South American, attacking, cost a million quid, all things that whet the appetite when a new signing is incoming.... Comparisons with Taricco (and Paz) would no doubt be made .... with this added Uruguayan flair we would surely PL bound once more, perhaps not that season but hive the lad 6 months to settle and the following season it was on.
Only for him to suffer tbe most horrific knee injury a month after his debut (a valentines day debut).

I’m pretty sure that Civelli had a good career in Argentina after he left us so that may well say a lot about Keane’s ability.
JET - had the ability but for some reason it never happened. Billy Clarke - I wanted him to do really well especially as he overcame a serious injury but it wasn’t to be.
Liam Trotter - a completely wrong red card really set him back here. He did however have a fairly good career.

Mark Brennan - like Garvan never became the player that the early days had threatened.
Always remember listening to the radio when we were playing West Ham in a second replay on a frozen pitch with him having his back strapped up. Injury got the better of him, didn't it?
Matt Richards and Ian Westlake...a lot of appearances between them and they seemed to be building up a real telepathy between them early on...then Richards' confidence seemed to get sapped away by the crowd never to return, and Westlake got pointlessly sold on...

Brennan and Putney came just after the golden time and just didn't do it did they, I thought they would both really step up.
I thought Mark Brennan was a lovely player when he broke into the team. He actually made 168 appearances over five years, but never became the player he promised to be. I always thought Putney was more limited, but you are right - neither quite did it.

I liked Shane Supple, Scott Barron, Tom Eastman, Matt Richards, Ian Westlake, Dean Bowditch, Darren Ambrose, Darren Bent, and so on who I wish had made it here and stayed having great careers. Recently I wish that Downes, Dozzell and Bishop had stayed to form the backbone of the recovery taking us up two leagues in the process.
I wish Dozzell Snr. had stuck with us in the 90's, our fall in form in 1993 was frankly due to his departure and neither he or Ipswich ever recovered from that transfer in the early Premiership.
Dyer - yes he was an England international six months after leaving and he also funded the 2-3 players that got us over the line the next season - but he was an Ipswich boy who made good despite a tough childhood (which we knew was tough at the time and we now know was even tougher). I would have loved him to have burst on the scene as an Ipswich player in the our first season back in the Premier League. Even if we'd had to sell him after a season - we would have got so much more than the 6 million we got for him.

Owen Garvan. When he first broke through I thought we'd unearthed a real talent, looked like he could be a Championship version of Gerrard. He never really kicked on.
Was it Owen who suffered quote a bad injury and then had glandular fever that he never really recover from? I remember someone from around that time having to give up because of illness after injury

We had 1 opening game of the season where we played Jamie Peters on one wing and Mcdonald (I want to say dean) on the opposite wing, they were outstanding that 1st game. I don't really know what happened but I really wish they had both continued how they started.
I also remember the early days of Titus when no one knew what to do with him, he just used to charge forward with the ball and opposition players bounced off him

Civelli is a good shout. The injury meant we’ll never know.
I think we can go further and say that if any midfielder Jim signed (after Evans handed him cash) had worked out then his tenure and our last 15 years could have been very different.
We brought in Norris, Sumulikoski, Quinn, Campo and Civelli but the end result was us losing our way and becoming a bit of a muddle. Strange that, as a midfielder himself, it was the area of the pitch where we struggled most to get it to work.

I always feel like if Connor Wickham could have stayed for just one more season things would have been better for both Ipswich and Wickham himself. He had barely turned eighteen when he was sold but if he played like he had in the back half of 10/11, he could have been a twenty goal striker, but instead he found himself on the bench for the Mackems and his career never really got going. Might also have avoided some of those injuries.
I really, really wanted Andre to do well here, heck of an eye for a pass but his teammates just weren't good enough to be on the same wavelength for those quick balls forward. Needed to be in a better team and it appears he has that in QPR.

I think you're right about him getting glandular fever actually, that rings a bell. He was certainly hampered by injuries too. He went on to do well at Palace for a bit but he never hit the heights I thought he looked capable of from his early games here.
