This bit was more than a little worrying too... A very British attitude to whistleblowers that. Witness the treatment by NHS senior managers of whistleblowers there and Barclays use of private investigators to uncover the same.

Unfortunately if you follow a capitalist and further to the right agenda.... on 09:30 - Jan 21 with 509 views | unstableblue | ... then small government and where possible smaller government services becomes the order of the day. Especially as the tax regime is replaced. Private water companies needing to provide a share holder dividend also an outcome. Given climate change, extreme weather, increasing population then the environment agency should have its funding increased, not reduced. We need to look to Germany, Benelux and the Nordics..not the USA for exemplars

Am I right in thinking that companies have a duty to maximise share-holder returns? So a Water Company has a responsibility to minimise costs in order to raise profits and therefore dividends So just pump raw sewage into waterways because it is far cheaper that treating and then hope you don't get caught/fined

Agreed although Germany is a poor example on environmental protection given its one of the largest CO2 emitters per capita, and still building coal power plants. Another concern is things like this get very little press in the media. Those in power seem to be able to slip these things through with litte accountability.
