That is one of the dangerous myths peddled by the not too bright.

Having a system where you remove local accountability, and allow a half dozen grey suits to decide who is in power.

The teal problem is not less democracy, but voter participation. I don't expect voters to be glued to Parliament TC, but maybe to ask themselves why when they elected an habitual liar, he turned out to be a liar.

Where is there any real disquiet about the billions wasted on PPE ? Maybe demanding that the MP swapping sides is made to stand for election.

Nope, instead let's remove local accountability, that will solve everything.

With the majority that Labour had they could have attempted/changed FPTP.

How is that a myth Einstein?

Why would one of the only two beneficiaries of FPTP attempt to change to PR?

PR is best for democracy but neither Labour nor the Tories would sanction a vote on it unless forced, as by the LDs. And we all saw how that went.

It’s a bit chicken and egg isn’t it though? The people who seek to elect themselves on the more managerial and better than the Tories ticket like Blair and Starmer it seems haven’t shifted the Overton Window in power or opposition. It’s kept sliding right and voters with it.

My pragmatism is based on us having to do something different if we want to actually start addressing the underlying issues in the UK. The worst thing is when nobody’s really even talking about them and possible solutions that they’ll never stand a chance of being included in any manifesto.

Gordon Brown introduced many decent policies that produced tangible benefits for many needy people. I don't find it credible to denounce the 1997 - 2010 governments so easily. I wasn't a great fan of Blair, but the domestic policies were Brown's.

I'll wait and see what Starmer's manifesto contains - he's been frustratingly, but understandably, fairly quiet on detailed policy. I'd hope he keeps much of the 2019 manifesto. We'll see.

"replace FPTP"

Labour had years to do that under Blair & Brown...

No sheet sherlock. Guess what? I'm neither Blair, nor Brown.

I have my own ideas!

Yet your posting today (presumably since Corbyn) is littered with holier than thou posturing and you look round incredulously wondering why people on the left aren’t energised in the same way……

The nonsense about standing up to the establishment for the first time is exactly why this position isn’t taken seriously too. It’s as tone deaf as a Fabricant interview or coordinated cabinet tweet flagshagging the most convenient cause or anniversary.

I am presenting logic and evidence.

Sorry that bothers you so much to deflame my character.

Or is it a generation of “left wingers” are doubling down after years of evolution on issues they ignored are now a large part of left wing identity they are scared of.

Go cry into a beef burger and pretend I’m ignorant. Again, my posts haven’t aged like milk.

So popular it's only used by the UK and, I believe, Belarus.

I mean left in the accepted sense. Including those callis and yourself love to demonise and blame for momentum’s disasters etc. I agree, think you’ve demonstrated plenty of times you don’t understand these terms.

Momentum was a youth movement largely and nowt to do with me. Never joined or engaged with it.

F**k your terms, I’d rather stand for what I believe in.

Wasn't me either. There are worse things to be called than Gammon.

I draw the line at Prosciutto or Jamón. That's really below the belt.

Agreed but these were progressive policies in a time of growth and when the crash came and austerity with it, the gains were pretty much wiped out. An austerity programme that even Labour would have followed.

I believe they really could have shifted the Overton Window and shown more the need to invest and the benefits of public spending – in good times and bad – but they didn’t So for me the 13 years was a bit of a missed opportunity for the future.

Brown at least admitted more recently that New Labour didn’t do enough about regional imbalances. That’s a start. But we’re still back to square one when it comes to structural policies and shifts that would help us rebalance the country, the economy and society.
