It shouldn't matter. Of course it will though.

Hopefully he has the moral compass to resign within the next 48 hours or this is the tipping point for the 54 letters to appear.

Lol, you think he has a moral compass?

Yes, just confirmed Sue Gray report is delayed until the Met investigation is concluded.

Some commentators saying that is 3 months+

How convenient. Presumably trying to pick the lesser of 2 threats to his PMship, since the SG report was starting to look as though it could have been fatally damaging.

What a bunch of crooks.

Further to that we'll get the "Nobody's allowed to talk about it as there's an ongoing investigation".

Wouldn't surprise me if Dick has taken this course of action at Johnson's request. Kick the can down the road and three months later it'll be "insufficient evidence to prosecute".

Of course it matters who he is.

If you, I or Joe Bloggs were caught having a party then we would have got a spot fine. If we hadn't been caught at the time, then there is no way that the police would waste their te investigating us nearly two years later. Wouldn't happen.

None of that means a higher threshold of evidence is required to fine Boris.

It should be a relatively open and shut case which should take no time at all to investigate, certainly not many weeks or months. In reality this is the Met's fault for not investigating about a month ago.

Every day he stays is bad for the country.

It's not odd.

He is conflating two separate things.

1). I am sure most are pleased he's being investigated.
2). People are annoyed that it may lead to a delay in getting rid of him.

I think for many (2) is much more important than (1).

Agreed... Also I think people are just extremely frustrated with the timing of this from the Met.

The police can argue, rightly, that they had no idea what was happening 'behind closed doors'. No. 10 is a workplace and it would have been assumed that the rules were being followed

Any delay makes no real difference, much as having the timbrel go round the block one more rime - the end will be the same, only slightly later.

Clinging on against all advice, and common sense will not only damage him long after this is over, but will cause long term harm to the Tory Party.

There is still the no small matter of the PPE scandal, and the failure to keep at tight rein on the 'bounce back' loans.

And we still have the thought that there is more to come - better start stripping that gold wallpaper off the walls, fat boy.

The annoyance is purely timing - they had months to investigate and chose (or were told) not to, for them to announce this now rather than waiting just 2 or 3 days for Sue Gray's report (due out on Thursday was common thinking) smacks of "tactical" timing which seems to more helpful to the PM rather than the Police.

The only potential procedural benefit of the timing to the Police "could" be that by delaying the publishing of the report restricts the disclosure of tangible evidence Ms Gray has found which may then influence the answers that some witnesses give to the Police during questioning.

Not convinced myself but can see some logic in the Police not wanting Gray's findings "polluting" their investigation

Where did they get to with the Jennifer Arcuri investigation?

Anyone who doesn't have "highly sceptical" as their default reaction to this is beyond naive, at best.

Worst thing that could have happened. Now the Su Gray report won't be released this week and word was there was enough in it to nail Johnson.

it was never going to be quick, but I struggle to see any final outcome other than boris going. he can't survive the report whether it's next week or in a month. there are enough people who have made up their minds and the report will provide the ammunition.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

Can any MP (edit) call a vote of no confidence in the govt or is there some sort of threshold to reach?

Would be funny watching Tories line up to defend this crappola govt even if it didn't get them out.

A VONC is usually called by the leader of the opposition. Normally with the support of other parties.

With an 80 seat majority there is no way it would pass.

No he doesn't, it's just another of his hot takes. It's completely correct that the police are investigating. Nobody 'freaking out' about it and I'm sure are more than happy that the police have belatedly got round to doing what they should have done weeks ago. People are exasperated at the twists and turns and the distraction this all is, but that's something entirely different.

I guess not, but wouldn't it be nice to make the Tory party own Johnson by defending him? I'm keen that they don;t just get rid of him and then everythings done and fine - they have utmost responsibility for him too.

I’d like to think that the lowly police officers allocated this investigation will be more than happy to stick the boot in… The issue will be if the senior management decide to take an interest

Should never have taken this long. It is always in the public interest to investigate

These are the chaps leading the investigation

Not so sure that will do them any favours, the number of members of the general public who are finally waking up, having the scales removed from their eyes & becoming more cynical is increasing all the time. This latest move may well be seen as just more evidence of Machiavellian manoeuvering & corruption by Johnson & his mates.

Sorry, but philosophical point of order. Machiavelli was just an adviser, it was people like Cesare Borgia who were the political movers comparable to Boris Johnson. Although in my attempted vindication of poor Niccolo I have drawn an equivalence between him and Dominic Cummings...

O would hardly describe Johnsons actions as "Machiavellian manoeuvering ", more the actions of a 4 year old with jam around it's mouth denying that he has eaten any of the donuts.

Seem to me that the contents of the Grey report is known, enough will be published to keep the PM in place. So fans of the PM can still be supportive.

Fans of the PM will still be able to use the “wait for the investigation”, as a defence of the PM.

The PM and team are hoping that the people will have forgotten all of this when the investigation finally concludes. Cummings will run out of material.
The dismissive attitude to the public will be that the PM can wait for this to calm down, create some other news, and then be safe enough.

Would like to see more people in the media challenging ministers when they say stuff like “Boris has lead the country through Covid successfully”.
Surely they would need to wait for the full report on the pandemic response before declaring the PM as being successful. Seems logical.

Well this is taking an interesting twist. Confirmed that the Govt have delayed publication of the Sue Gray report, not the Met requesting it.

And the MET investigation is likely to be wider with potential criminal prosecutions following according to Adam Wagner
