More clean sheets under McKenna in league than Cook managed on 12:59 - Feb 9 by BlueBlood90 | A solid start for McKenna but he couldn't have hoped for a better run of fixtures to begin with. We've arguably played three decent teams so far in Wycombe, Bolton and Sheffield Wednesday and we've won one and lost two of those so Saturday at MK Dons may tell us a bit more. |
It’s better than ‘solid’. 6 wins in 8 games is an excellent start. So is 5 clean sheets. Because a team is at the bottom doesn’t mean they are a push over. Doncaster saw off Sunderland on Saturday and Gillingham dug in at PR on Saturday under their new manager. Even poor teams compete sometimes. Accrington, who you didn’t include in the decent team list, are 12th. They’re not mugs by any means eaither. You can only beat what’s in front of you. We’ve done that in recent weeks and KM, coaches and players deserve credit for that. I think McGreal deserves credit too for steadying the ship after Cook went and the players went missing at Charlton. [Post edited 9 Feb 2022 22:12]

Wasn't our fixtures to start the season off considered as 'easy'? How did that do us......? Gelling and all that...... Like you say, credit where it is due!

I always find it odd how people assess other teams in this league - probably haven't watched the league closely enough to realise there is no easy game, and anybody can really beat anybody. As you say, Doncaster won at Sunderland deservedly on Saturday, and have already done the double on MK Dons this season. Gilling ham have had a successful new manager bounce and made it a difficult game against us. We've also had 2 wins against Wycombe and Accrington who are difficult sides in this division to play against.

There’s also the fact that you don’t get style points. A win is a win and getting them in the worst circumstances is way better than losing gallantly.

McKenna simply benefited by the team gelling as soon as he arrived. Terrible bad luck for Cook that they should choose to do so just after he left, but that’s football.

I know you were only quoting their report. I didn't mean to suggest the errors were yours at all. More a comment on the level of accuracy in the original report. I believe that on John Wark's debut, a national journalist wrote about how well Beattie (I think it was) had done. Wark was playing instead of him.

"McKenna but he couldn't have hoped for a better run of fixtures to begin with. Compare with Morecambe, Newport, Burton, Cheltenham, MK Dons, Wimbledon, Bolton and West Ham kids. All with having been in post for 4 months and had the chance to get his own players in too. Those (even easier) fixtures saw us gain 3 draws and 5 defeats. In fact, try the end of Cook's reign. Oldham, Colchester, Oxford, Oldham again, Sunderland, Rotherham, Crewe, Arsenal kids and Barrow. 2 difficult matches and 7 that are against far lower opposition. 2 wins, 5 draws and 2 defeats. This easy run of fixtures, hasn't proven at all easy before McKenna got here.

More clean sheets under McKenna in league than Cook managed on 22:59 - Feb 8 by jayessess | Don't recall Mathie saying he was awful. He's a relentlessly negative co-commentator in any case. No striker scores from most shots and certainly not from most headers. I don't think a striker having multiple efforts on target and directly contributing to the winning goal can reasonably be described as having been "awful". [Post edited 8 Feb 2022 23:06]

He wasn't awful. But you'd hope he would do better. He has clearly lost confidence and gets caught offside far too often. Maybe he has been unlucky, maybe he has not had enough created for him. But one goal in how many games? Something can't be quite right. He can't have just become a bad player overnight. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Not on top form and his finishing edge is missing. However, a big part of a team that is still winning. It doesn't matter that his header is saved if Bakinson is there to put the rebound in. I am sure Bonne will come good again before the end of the season.

My guess is that he is very much a confidence player. As he hasn't scored much recently and luck hasn't been on his side his confidence has probably been destroyed by it. I'm sure he will come good again and that he is a quality player. But personally I wouldn't play him against MK Dons. Fragile confidence is not what we need for such a massive game.

Altho not long as passed since the sheff wed game. I do feel we go into sat another step closer to what should be ipswich under KM going forwards. I spent time rewatching last nights game. And when you're not in that historic fear mode that we are going to slip up and concede, you appreciate the shape and fluidity of the team on and off the ball.
