Storm Eunice on a par with the storm of 1987! 12:17 - Feb 16 with 6496 viewsportmanking

Widespread amber warnings across the whole of southern/eastern/western England haven't been on this scale since then. We could be looking at some severe disruption during Friday daytime in Suffolk...

Some models are suggesting up to 80-90mph winds even inland!

Game could be in jeopardy perhaps on Sat.

Based in something I just read, I fully expect my journey to Portman Road to be interrupted by several falling trees

I'd be very surprised if the game's on. Burton won't be travelling down in this.

If they came down Friday - problematic. If they came down Thursday or Saturday morning they'd be fine. Not sure what the EFL rules are tbh.

You're not old enough to have witnessed the hurricane in 1987 I presume?

Winds of 70-80mph in exposed urban areas like Ipswich could cause widespread damage.

Most teams travel down on the day before, no? I highly doubt they'd travel on Sat AM that's for sure.

In normal circumstances yes. I'm just not sure what the EFL/FA rules are in terms of fulfilling fixtures. If a club says "we couldn't travel the day before therefore please postpone" do the authorities automatically agree? I dunno.

Hate to be pedantic ( but, this is TWTD)... The 1987 storm wasn't a hurricane. It did, just about, have hurricane force winds though. A hurricane is a quite specific sort of tropical storm... (The weatherman was actually correct, albeit perhaps unhelpful).

Sounds like Burton should forfeit now and we’ll take the 3 points

Although the strong winds were much earlier in the day, Manchester City managed to play at Portman Road the day after the 1987 storm.

Rendlesham Forest reduced to matchsticks overnight as I recall.

Yep, it was seriously impressive. Parts of the forest were completely flattened.

We gained an extra shed in our garden, or at least parts of one.

Sustained winds of 70-80mph plus for 4 to 5 hours apparently, but easing off on Friday evening. It's not going to be pretty.

As you suggest, an earlyish inspection on Friday evening might be helpful.

Out here in the Fens with all that open space could be interesting!

I lived out there at the time - it was serious devastation. Whole forests wiped out; 2ft wide tree trunks snapped in half like matchsticks.

That storm is probably my earliest memory, I was 4… my grandad stood on our door step and joked his car had been blown down the road, then had to dive out of the way of a fence coming at him 😂

I recall him calling the fence a ‘cnt’ in his rage

I did my paper round in that. Didn't know what it was when I set off, just thought it was pretty windy and came across a lot of trees across the roads.

Turns out I was the only paper boy who did his round that day, so I got plenty of tips that Christmas. My parents were relieved when I got home in one piece!

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

I recall going to Bourne Park the day after and was genuinely amazed to see giant trees ripped out of the ground.
