End-game to the Russia situation 15:40 - Feb 27 with 4604 viewsThisIsMyUsername

How real is the chance of this ending in complete nuclear armageddon? Or will the West/NATO/Putin himself/Putin's Generals prevent it from going that far? *

Just wondering as I'm trying to make some plans for the future and would like to have all the relevant information.

* Serious questions; not being at all flippant.

Poll: Which of these events will happen the soonest?

What difference does it make to your plans? Genuinely intrigued.

Because if I won't be alive in 5 years there's no point trying to think too far ahead. Obvious I'd have thought.

Not really. You might die tomorrow in a car accident.

Nuclear war is very unlikely but not impossible. Not sure it should be affecting your plans.

Truly impaired.

Of course.

However, I suppose one goes through life not ever thinking for a second that nuclear war is something that would ever happen. Surely no one would be so stupid as to orchestrate their own destruction in response to their own nuclear actions, right?

Until you start to wonder...

I would imagine there are people high up in the Russian military who would never let it happen. Same in the UK/US/French etc militaries.

For anybody over the age of about fifty, we can remember when it was a constant thought that nuclear war could happen - with only about four minutes warning.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

I can honestly say that I never seriously thought it might happen back then. Now however Putin is in a hole and I worry what short powerful men are capable of.

Great. Now he's not going to want to go out tomorrow.

In response to his OP I wonder if truthfully part of the future plans might include packing as many tins of baked beans as possible into a rucksack then heading for the hills.

As a matter of interest, I wonder where the safest spot in the country would be, if any.

Edited: I have no idea what naked beans are.

It actually came closer than we ever knew (until later). Grew up not far from Lakenheath/Mildenhall, so it was, if not constantly on the mind, at least a frequently occurring thought.

Now live in prime target Cheltenham ...

Cos in the event of a nuclear war, the first thing they'll go for is a racecourse?

Well I'm within Newmarket range so that's me fecked.

My mother isn't a million miles from Uttoxeter.

Load of family still in and around London but unless they go for greyhound tracks they should be mostly ok.

It was all a bit scary wasn’t it? I remember as a child being cornered by a CND type on holiday once and being subjected to all their leaflets and booklets about what total annihilation looked like. It scared me witless for ages. They were incredibly graphic. It still gives me the shivers now. It definitely took the edge off my holiday!

Ahem. I think the first step might be for Russia to use more serious weapons and attitude to the good folk of Ukraine

Today’s keyboard warriors probably don’t realise but in the 50s and 60s nuclear bombers were flying from and over Suffolk to the edge of Russian airspace on 24 hour rotation. Other than scattering a few nuclear bombs over Spain nothing much happened then - and nothing will now.

all games, including military stand offs, involve trying to model your opponent's responses. presenting your self as mad, as beyond any conventional notions of legitimate response, is therefore a great way of screwing with your opponent's calculations. but they need to believe that you really are mad not just pretending.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show
