On zero hour / gig contracts suffering from rising prices, sent from the tube drivers today. To go with their gratefully received message on Tues. And not forgetting their continuing weekend show of support - they're really on the side of the less well off and never miss a chance to show that. Thanks brothers.

Of course you knew what I meant but you couldn't help yourself hey?

I didn’t know you didn’t know about shared parental leave in the UK, no, but now you do.

Wow, so many on here who know unhappy Norwegians. Those taxes must be crippling.

Well working for a Norwegian company means, perhaps surprisingly to you, that I talk to a lot of Norwegians. As I said in my initial post, the majority are mostly happy, but not all. You seem to miss the distinction.

Guess it's cause he stated that it's accessible to everyone, not equally accessible to everyone. It probably is accessible to everyone in theory. It's just a lot easier if yer parents sent you to Eaton then if yer coming from other backgrounds where perhaps a university education isn't expected or the norm

I have Jerseys on ignore but I can’t say I’m surprised he hasn’t heard of the Open University if he’s disputing my point. We’ll add it to the list of things he’s ignorant about, like where to buy a suit or a chair.

Yes. And at the very low end of developed and diverse economies like all our neighbours.

We are certainly not a high-tax nation in any relevant sense. And it’s a particularly dangerous insinuation given our already awful record on spending and investing in the country’s future and its people.

The world is not France Belgium Italy and Scandinavia. We are a highly taxed people in the UK. More tax is not the answer; better politicians is the answer.

Well yes, in a country of 5 million people, it's obvious that a few will complain. Again though, like Chico, you're taking everything literally to make a pedantic point.

I think you're splitting hairs, although I'm not sure why. University education isn't accessible to lots of people living on council estates and benefits. It just isn't.

They're not mutually exclusive. Efficient public services require sufficient taxation.

Of course. There always are.

In my experience though, people in Sweden for example complain about taxes less than people in the UK. Mainly because in the UK taxes rarely seem to come back in the form of meaningful spending and for the benefit of society.

In practice, UK spending props up public services and infrastructure from collapse rather than investing in the long term (children at the fore) and sharing the benefits of a market economy. That’s the key difference in Scandinavia and even our neighbours compared to us.

It's incredibly difficult (and you would receive very little help from the government) but it is just about accessible to people living on council estates and benefits. I'm speaking from personal experience... Up to about 10-15 years ago in Ireland, if you were unemployed for more then a year I think, you could go to uni, keep your dole and get a grant. Now that makes it truely accessible for people on benefits etc

You seem vague, and are only talking about Ireland.

Also, don't forget, you're on the side of Chickers here. And he's ALWAYS wrong. He's so wrong he's had to put me on ignore to try to stop me saying he's wrong.

But everyone knows he's wrong.

Upvoted for the last bit.

Leitrim is a good cookie. He might be talking about Ireland but he knows on what side his bread is buttered - or rather that both sides are unbuttered.

Ahhhhh. I see! One of those guys.

Your glaswegian colleague regularly makes this claim.
When pressed to provide evidence, he crawls off muttering darkly about notifying the relevant authorities.
Then makes a wild accusation about the site owners, sulks for a couple of months, rinses and repeats.
It’s like reruns of Fawlty Towers. You know what’s coming, but you have to watch again to see if it’s still as funny as you remember.

I went to university in the late 90,s, while living on the chalkstone Estate in Haverhill and being on the dole. Left school at 16 with no qualifications. That's why I can't agree that is completely accessible for people in this situation. It's just incredibly difficult and may involve cheating, lieing and doing whatever it takes, as you will get little help from the state . The bit about at Ireland was just an example of a better and more just system

Well if you'd accepted the simple point made in initial post, that your statement that your view applied to everyone was an exaggeration, which you now seemed to have accepted, we'd both have saved some time.

I can only assume things were different in the 90's, because there's no way you're getting a university place with no qualifications now.

I guarantee you there are people living in Brixton - as just one example - who have no access to a university education.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Did a 1 year access to higher education course prior to going. Never told the dole and managed to sign on for a few months before they found out and stopped it. Then worked nights in a pig head de-boning factory til course was over. Then got into uni the next year. I'm not saying its easy, quite the opposite. I'd never really met anyone who had been to uni prior to this. Most of my mates never escaped and many would be in a situation where they quite rightly feel they have no access to a university education. I'm just saying it is possible

Good on you.

I’ve done my share of sh/tty jobs growing up and as a student. But nothing like that and not to make further education possible.
