Oh I don’t know. That ball would have done many a top batsman and actually did for Strauss in later years. I think he was coming towards the end of his test career anyway, if memory serves me right.

He was a good Captain and player. Not the best batsman ever, but 10 test centuries and an average over 35 isn’t the worst. He had some bottle to play again too after the great Malcolm Marshall literally splattered his nose all over face - and the ball. I’d have waddled out in a suit of armour after that experience.

For the batsman to save your life my choice will always be Sir Isaac Vivian Alexander Richards. Now there was a man with presence and if he got in, it was thank you and goodnight for the opposition.
