Putin has outfoxed the west for years 17:38 - Mar 6 with 1023 views | reusersfreekicks | Great article on BBC website covering how Bush younger, Blair etc were fooled. How Clinton's extension of NATO was always likely to be problematic and how Putin has sought to divide the west. Trump really is an idiot and a Putin stooge who weakend the USA's world influence. Ignorance in mid america and the weakness of traditional republicanism have benefited Putin. Russia played a part in Brexit, seeking to divide and weaken Europe. Banks and Farage have been cheerleaders of his. They have betrayed their country imo. The first casualty is always truth and Russia's feeding of propaganda and lies to it's people is striking. Like Hitler, Putin plays the victim. Truth is an anathema to Trump and Farage and other populist leaders too. Even our PM has a lose relationship with it. The suffering of the Ukranians is heartbreaking, the west should have seen it coming and not misjudged Putin so badly with such tragic consequences. [Post edited 6 Mar 2022 17:41]

I doubt either will happen. Who is going to do it? After 20+ years, all those with any power are either like him or are too tied to the current regime. Moreover, overthrowing a strong and still popular leader (who is able to blame the country's woes on others) in order to oblige foreign powers is more likely to get you hated than feted.

Still seems popular with many in Russia. How much that might change if the sanctions do cause economic hardship is a moot point. He can blame all of that on the West.

Different sections of society isn't it. I still can't remember which news channel it was doing the rounds on Russian streets when this first began, but whoever it was stopped a variety of people on the streets for a brief interview to gauge opinion. I don't like to stereotype but it was generally the older crowd they spoke to who are most influenced by State news, and were more pro-state, which of course isn't surprising given the differing means of how we access info across the generations. The younger people were quite outspoken about their anger. Mind you, some of them will likely now have their liberty removed, for now at least.

He is. Especially with the older generation. A friend of ours was the Russian Olympic swimming coach before coming to the west. I met her father at a social gathering a couple of years ago. He's in a book of the 100 most important officers of the Soviet era. Lovely bloke. He was pretty much ostracized by his former colleagues because of his daughter. However, he was 100% behind Putin. He saw him as a strong decisive leader and saw the western leaders as being weak. He said that was the majority view in Russia.

The Russian aquaintance of a friend was a student in the UK, around the age of 20. She, also, is extremely pro Putin.

But shouldn't be a surprise. There are many young nationalists as well as older ones.

I suppose. Demographics will make a big difference I know, along with general attitudes, personal experiences, societal needs, education, and a million other influences. But nonetheless. As a rule we like to think the newest people to the human race will be the most enlightened don't we. That gives some hope for the future.

A young Filipino colleague of mine is CRAZY for Bongbong Marcos who is running in the next GE in the Philllipines and will hear no wrong about him, even from older members of the community who genuinely remember life under martial law, the rampant corruption, etc, etc, dismissing it all as 'propaganda'. Yes. A member of the Marcos family is a credible candidate for government there, after the damage and corruption they engendered. Sadly, there will always be those who actively seek and embrace their own oppressors, because they think if they suck up to them enough they'll benefit this time. The origin of this specific situation goes back to 1240 and the fall of Kiev to the Mongols.

It's already changing. There was a woman, not sure who, on 'Pick of the week' just before 7 this evening saying that Russian friends of hers who'd been pro-Putin only a few days ago, had now completely changed their minds & were now 100% pro-Ukraine.

We clearly missed a trick with sanctions in 1241. But I was thinking more about our so-called modern, democratic era where the old world nationalist and colonialist ideas should have been sidelined a little more easily rather than having a renaissance around the new millennium.
