Edmundson out is obviously not a good thing 14:18 - Mar 11 with 787 viewskizaitfc

But I do just wonder, providing Burgess is match fit and sharp, having an actual left footer in the left CB role could be a good thing.

I dont recall what Burgesses long passing is, but if he can quickly get the ball sprayed out to Burns when counter attacking which is far easier as a left footer on the left side

Poll: Mick in or out? (not a dig at Mick just want to see the overall opinion on here)

Lot of unknowns here really.

Hypothetically Burgess slots in very nicely there. We signed him because he was performing well in precisely this set up. You'd hope that the reason we've kept so many clean sheets is not just the individual quality of all 3 centre backs but also our general shape out of possession and the way the 3 of them have been covering for each other.

There was a moment against Lincoln where one of their forwards got away from Donacien down the left and you saw Woolfie put on the afterburners and it wasn't even a contest. As the central defender, Woolfenden's reading the game so well at the moment that he's barely making tackles, just interceptions 90% of the time. You'd hope that mutual support applies even if you swap out Edmundson for Burgess (also, whisper it, but Edmundson overplaying it is one of the very few routes to goal our opponents have found under McKenna...).

That said, you worry that any change to a backline that's doing so well is going to inadvertently disrupt something fundamental. Burgess has looked vulnerable to pace in behind him at times. In possession he's clearly not as good as Edmundson, so perhaps he gives opponents someone to press. Alternately his lack of willingness to drive into space might allow the opposition to leave him free and press somewhere else.

Could go either way.

Personally, I think Burgess should be fine. If Morsy plays, as the news today suggests, the big issue now for tomorrow is Burns, our second highest goalscorer...

Nice assessment. And yeah, if there's been a weakness in those back three at times, it has been the Fridge getting caught up the pitch and people getting in behind him. I'm nitpicking though - he's been generally excellent.

Agreed on Woolf. I wouldn't want anyone to miss through injury, but I think we'd be in a worse place if it had been Woolf out for a spell.

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

yeah, should be fine. If we saw Portsmouth had an injured CB but were swapping them for another £750k CB with 150+ games at this level, we'd hardly be rubbing our hands together with glee, would we?

Confident KM will make a new player out of him.
