Russian War Protesters 19:16 - Mar 13 with 2469 viewsChurchman

According to the BBC, 800 were arrested today in Russia. Just how brave are those people? I just can’t imagine what level of courage of convictions and strength you need to do what they are doing when you know the outcome is going to be at best dreadful.

Amazing people.

Worth bearing in mind though that the overwhelming majority of Russian people support the war, sorry special military operation, in Ukraine. Putin's popularity went up in the early days of the Invasion. It's been drummed into them since 2014 that Ukraine needs to be liberated from Nazis. This is why sanctions are so important. Once the ordinary citizens of Russia experience financial pain, their unwavering support for Vlad may begin to falter.

Absolutely. Putin must be one of the most popular leaders in the world. His words are believed without question.

It’s partly what makes the actions of these protestors all the more remarkable.

Yep, disgusting isn't it. Londongrad in more ways than one. The autocratic, wannabe dictatorial tendencies are in plain sight. And yet people still defend them

ps. Russia's sentence is up to 15 years though. Not that it matters - both are abhorrent.

Yes brave people I agree. Most of them will be off for a spell in a gulag I expect.

I wonder if most ordinary Russian folk even realise whats really going on in Ukraine outside of the Kremlin controlled Orwellian bubble they live in

No, they (mostly?) don't have a clue. I've a Ukrainian colleague from the Crimea with family in both Russia and the Ukraine. She's hearing different sides to the story from each country, and surprisingly doesn't know who to believe despite it being pretty obvious Russia have invaded. The power of propaganda.

They must realise something isn't right with all the western companies pulling out. Unless they're being told the whole of the western world has turned Nazi

I read one source which said 13,000 Russians had been arrested to date for protesting - they must be running out of jail cells

Fair play to them - I hope it ends with them overthrowing the steroid addled midget.

They're probably being told that western companies are pulling out in preparation for an all-out attack on Russia by the evil NATO empire that wants to destroy them once and for all and steal all the oil and gas.

I think those who have access to non-Russian media are well aware.

Someone I know was in Helsinki last week and said that the station was full of Russians who had upped and left (she speaks a little Russian and could tell they’d packed up and left with no job or place to go!)

That which is necessary, is legal.

Hence why the Gov's heavy handed approach to the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill 2021is so universally unpopular.

Russia is a police state though under Putin. I really hope anyone arrested is fully exonerated when Putin crumbles, which will hopefully be extremely soon.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

A "Fair Trial" means the timely application of the Law without fear or favour, and with access to decent legal representation.

There is a massive backlog of trials, so the timely bit is in question.

There is massive underfunding of Legal Aid, and morale is very low in criminal law.

The recent anti-Protest clauses in the Policing Bill are such, though, that the bar is set incredibly low for conviction. Did you make a noise? Did somebody find the noise or your actions annoying? "Fair" application of these laws equals the outlawing of the right to protest. And look at how the Met policed the Sarah Everard vigil BEFORE this Bill had passed through Parliament for a flavour of how their new powers will be applied.

We aren't living in Russia. But we are moving in the direction of post-democratic autocracy.

So how's the Russian going nowadays Steve, or is it Comrade Steve?

I also saw Gove having a tantrum. I didn't realise he was 5.
