I noticed this on the Sunderland forum. My first ever away game was Arsenal in 1972. We won 1-0. I was struck by how grand and big Highbury was compared to PR, but thought the open terrace Clock End looked a bit rubbish.

Arsenal was also my first away match - I think Kevin Campbell scored a hat-trick. At the time they had just rebuilt on of their stands which looked very impressive at the time.
The Arsenal fans were very quiet.

Arsenal fans were very quiet? At the Highbury Library?
Did you go by coach? I remember having to walk through Stanley Park in the dark and everyone was buying bottles of water to wash the dog mess of their trainers.
I don’t know if it counts as an away game, but the Charity Shield at Wembley in 78. Town were rubbish. I remember a lot of talk about injuries, but looking at the XI now on paper it seems ok. The pitch was too far away.

I went to that. My dad and I went in the wrong part of the ground and got chased out by a load of them.
Ha, ha, ha!.....I went by train with my brother-in-law who is 7 or 8 years older than me so he was only early twenties.
We were also in with the home fans - (I've never forgiven my brother-in-law!) - along the side of the pitch. We must have got in relatively early as we were in an upper tier (for want of a better expression) but right at the front leaning against the wall looking directly over the lower tier. I seem to remember there was quite a height difference between the two tiers.
I was told not to celebrate if we scored!

Mine was the battle of Highbury (or the first I can remember at least):
We were sat in the East stand and things got a little heated to match the game. When they scored the winner, we had a couple of hundred people going nuts in our faces (we'd celebrated the Norwich goals openly). The result still stings.
Has anyone ever looked at their own postings for last day or so? Oh my... so sorry. Was Ullaa

Yup, perfect introduction for a ten year old.
I was at that enjoying corporate hospitality. My first away game was at Selhurst Park on an Easter Monday probably;y around 1957. 1-1 draw, pitch virtually devoid of grass and rock hard.
