The people running our club 08:03 - Mar 31 with 3023 viewsVic

It’s a pleasant change to feel that the people running our club actually know more about football than us lot on here!

Listening to the interviews we get, the fans forums, etc it’s just hit me how much these guys seem to know, how in control they are and how clear a strategy they have. For the last several years it really felt that we might know as much as those in the club - (owner, ceo - and sometimes even the manager!!)

I’m excited for next season and truly hope that this time, this time the results match the optimism.

Most people were just so pleased to hear anything from the ownership that it was bound to get a more favourable reaction.

Likewise with Ashton. The fans have been so starved of insight into thinking at the top, having to rely on sometimes mad speculation, that there is delight in what should be normal levels of information. Plus Ashton does communicate very well in a modern fashion, sharing stuff with the fans rather than talking at (or down to) them.

If you judge people on actions, for me they have delivered so far. The signings of Walton, Morsy and - although it's a loan - Celina show Gamechanger have put their money where their mouth is. Ashton has done more for the club's public appearance and stadium repairs/updates than Evans did in a decade.

I was cynical about the Americans when it was an online rumour because there are plenty of terrible owners either already in English football or knocking on the door to get in, but I genuinely think we've got lucky with this lot.

"But it’s a basic so many people in similar roles forget only too easily. It’s important."

Very true and I remain cautiously optimistic, as I think is Homer, rather than performatively cynical as certain other posters are.

Yep - that is very much where I am.

Much in the same way I was not interested in what our previous owner had to say (when he did communicate) - I'm not getting carried away with our new incumbents.

Not being negative but words are easy - it's the implementation we've always had a problem with.

Since KM has joined, I think those plans look a little more achievable than they ever did under Cook and it looks like we are building well behind the scenes.

It feels like we are in a far better position than we have been for many years but the cold hard reality is we will likely still be playing L1 football next season.

Good man

A bedsheet is better than doing absolutely nothing but moan on a forum about it

I mean a few of us were only saying it was a rubbish interview, I don't think anyone was calling for him to go. I didn't really want him to leave at that time, I just wanted him to run the club better although it turns out he was doing a lot of things that were slowly killing the club.

I think there was more to it than just luck.

Our unusual position in not owning the land under the stadium will put off a lot of the dodgy mortgage-it-and-run merchants.

Our history not only gives us a reputation way beyond our current status, but also a large fanbase spread across the country and even globally, of Suffolk expats and those who just fell in love with the Robson-era team, which can be tapped. All of which increases the "size" of the club and thus how much room for growth there is from our current, depressed position.

We already have a lot of the infrastructure required for growth. Big stadium, training ground, academy, etc. Tired and in need of an upgrade, perhaps, but it's basically all there. There is no need for a move or lots of expensive building work.

It was a prime target for proper investment, rather than a smash-and-grab.

Finally - and I know this is controversial - we were fortunate in the previous owner not wishing to sell to just anybody (or being forced into doing so by circumstances). Care was taken in who the club was passed on to, as evidenced by the fact Gamechanger said it took a year or more to get the deal done. Yes, that may perhaps have been nothing more than to protect the ongoing stake Evans holds in the club. But there was a level of care involved which made sure we we were transferred to good stewards.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Hence the emphasis on younger footballers and on developing players. That is the way to buy quality (relatively) cheap and add value.

Everything is set up towards that model, with so many of the coaching and recruitment teams having experience with Youth. Plus we've already seen it in operation. The sale of Downes and Dozzell covered an important chunk of last summer's transfer activity. It gets the club closer to break-even than could be managed any other way.

I think we'll be seeing a lot of good young players pass through ITFC in the coming seasons, but using their talent to improve our position while here.

And that will need the fans to buy in to the fact we will see good players leave. Potentially even this summer.

That's not a lack of ambition, just the business model we now have to enable us to improve in the longer term.

Agree with this, but with regards to Evans’ sale to Gamechanger, was that diligence on his part or luck? I ask the question because most of his other decisions regarding the club over 13 years were catastrophic.

I’m probably being a little unkind on Evans and your take might well be the correct one

I think it was a conscious decision. It was, after all, what he'd been saying long before the sale actually happened.

One catastrophic decision, really - hiring Roy Keane. Then a lot of firefighting after that with resources which were dwindling, in part due to him having blown his "buy a football club" budget, but also because of massive inflation in the sport.

It's not so much his approach (leave the Manager to run pretty much everything) was wrong, just that it was somewhat old-fashioned and, mostly, didn't work, especially with tight purse-strings. Only McCarthy had the calibre to make it function at all and even he ran out of steam in the end.

Great points all. Until you think about it, the point about not owning the land seems a negative, but actually it is a massive great positive.

Just remember it’s hot air backed with 100% borrowed money based on a business plan drawn up before Russian money became dirty. Things have changed a bit since then - including rampant inflation and very hard times ahead for average people. . Last time the club was run by a chancer spending money the club didn’t have like water it ended rather badly for the club - and rather well for Sheepshanks.

You may well find history is repeating itself.

That thread is still one of the funniest things. There was about three of us who thought it was rubbish and said nothing whilst loads of people thought it was incredible.

The Evans era was the nadir of ITFC history. Even modest investment and a semi-thought-through plan would have us performing far and above anything Evans managed.
