Jimmy Savile: A British Horror Story 16:12 - Apr 8 with 5117 viewsIllinoisblue

On Netflix. Facking hell. We all know the story and the depravity but he wasn’t even trying to hide his filthy ways.

On TV being interviewed by Harry Secombe saying about his work at Leeds Hosptial, “I help the lads and when nobody’s watching I help the lasses too”. Laughter from Harry.

On a different show with (who else) Gary Glitter who asks Jimmy if he’s aware of his reputation. Jimmy laughs and says “we’ve got some bean bags ready for you” as Glitter says he’s scanning the audience looking for girls.

Noncing in plain sight on national TV. Quite extraordinary.

Yes, simply terrible. Worryingly, he was subtly telling us all what he was doing in various interviews, but yet still got away with it at the time. I'm not sure about anyone else, but with his religious faith perhaps him doing all that charity work and rising millions that counterbalanced all the terrible and inappropriate things he was doing away from the public eye in his mind? Well, that's the impression I got, could be way off the mark.

I’m not sure it was like that. I just thought he was a weird, odd bloke. That was it really. I took no interest in his programmes or anything else to do with him. I suspect I’m not alone. The people that worked around him I’m sure must have known something and his bosses turned a blind eye because he was popular, brought in the money.

Politicians too? Given how disgracefully the politicians ignored the Post Office scandal, the latter wouldn’t surprise me in the least, especially as they had more than one in their own ranks like Sir Cyril Smith MBE.

It is difficult to put oneself back into the mindset from the past. I know there used to be an acceptance of sixth form students and teachers and that students who had finished school getting together with staff happened once upon a time. Clearly attitudes changed at some point more than 15-20 years ago.

I wonder if there was a sense of disbelief and the idea that Saville was simply saying those things and most people didn't think there was any possibility of truth behind them. Poor taste yes, but not covering what was really happening. That's my vague recollection of it.

It should be a lesson to us that whenever we have reason to be suspicious, someone should look into what is really going on. Clearly there were people who knew and were either complicit or simply turned a blind eye.
