Things to work on in the summer ..that don’t include spending ££ 23:57 - Apr 19 with 857 viewsChocorange

Defending corners
Attacking corners
Attacking free kicks
Sh1t housery through the game
Even more sh1t housery if 1 up with 10 mins to go ( A la Rotherham)
Stop letting late goals in / giving up leads

Set pieces. It seems to me - who has no coaching badges admittedly - that set pieces should be the easiest thing to practice. I'd have thought anyone in our first team should be able to deliver a decent dead ball if asked to. We even seem to take an inordinate amount of time to take throw-ins, like we've not thought much about what we might do if that sort of thing happened. We earn corner after corner. Anyone know what our corner conversion rate is? If it's not zero it's way to close to that for the number of tries we get at one.

It's all about physicality in this division. The "dark arts" aren't needed if you're 2 goals up, and let's face it, we could have been that far ahead in a lot of matches. Certainly second half of the season. I actually think a lot of the problem is our strikers are a bit thick: they never seem to be able to see the play developing, and their runs are poor. Bonne a possible exception, but he was clearly hiding yesterday: no confidence.

On Radio5 a couple of months ago they were talking generally about the importance of set piece (freekick/corner) situations and mentioned Man City have a set piece specialist coach. I assumed they focused on the delivery, nope apparently their role is focused on how to defend set pieces. That surprised me but the arguement is Man City have enough players who can put a ball into the box/take a freekick you don't need a specialist for that. They then mentioned it's the same at other Prem teams the set piece coaches the defending of a set piece. They also mentioned when it comes to the variation, trying something different from freekicks/corners that's the managers role.

Not sure if you saw the Newcastle v Leicester game at the weekend, but Leicester scored from a corner, cleverly worked and you saw Rodgers congratulate his coach on the set up.

Doesn't necessarily have to be a set piece coach or the Manager re different ideas, just somebody thinking differently.

Jamie Redknapp analysed the goal at half time, and there were several parts to get the corner to work, movement, blocking & also somebody moving position to cover defensively, if they were exposed. I love that sort of analysis, brings home a lot of detail, that you dont normally pick up.
