Have faith churchman, here's some good news from the front.

The fact that the Ukrainians have bombed the sh1t out of it has no bearing on this decision ( not sure it is hugely significant but a small success ).

What a vindictive b@stard ( I'm sure this was a goodwill gesture too ).

Get the Ukranians as many 2S22 truck-mounted howitzer and 2S7 Pion guns as possible in their dozens and dozens. The strange nature of this war being some kind of agreed artillery destruction effort by both sides not an air war, means as the Snake island event shows, Ukraine need huge long range firepower to grind the Russian machine down and roll back the gains.

"some kind of agreed artillery destruction effort by both sides".

Except there is no destruction taking place on Russian soil.

Maybe if there were then some of their own might think a bit differently.

Shame that Ukraine doesn't have the capability to reach into Russia and a few military targets based there. Not like for like shopping centres , schools and hospitals no matter how tempting that might feel.

Well this former American general and former Defence Secretary doesn’t rate Russia’s military performance.

https://uk.yahoo.com/news/former-defense-secretary-james-mattis-191210644.html

There is irony here in that when the war began, it was suggested economic sanctions would collapse Russia’s economy while its military would roll up Ukraine in days. It would seem the reverse has happened. While Russia is awash with money from particularly the EU, China and India for its energy, its military is making hard work of its lunch and losing senior officers and soldiers on the way. Not that Putin cares about lives.

Mind you Newsweek takes a more pessimistic (optimistic from where I’m standing) view of Russia’s economy.

Inevitable success for the Russian military today. The outstanding resilience and bravery of the Ukrainians can only hold the Russian military for so long.

Not big news for the war weary west, but it’s and it’s sister city are important victories for Russia this week.

Why should Putin stop?

He won his nuclear threat war. Military wise, he’s just chewing up Ukraine at minimal cost - he doesn’t care about lives and the west has handsomely paid for his weapons. Economy wise, he’s winning that. Politically, the west still looks weak and rudderless to me.

Shiny pin badges and promises when Halleys Comet next puts in an appearance won’t trouble Putin. Media wise, the west is looking tired, disinterested and desperate to get back to normal including in Johnson’s case, those cherished defence cuts for the 11th year in a row.

There is no reason why Putin shouldn’t carry on for now. At the very least push on to Odessa and swallow Kramatorsk and that area. Do that and Russia can negotiate a peace with reparations from Ukraine, a bumper deal with the EU, Nord2 and absorb the rump of Ukraine at leisure.

I feel so sorry for the Ukrainian people. They asked for none of this.

Just seen on BBC news, 4 Russians killed in a missile attack on Belgorod, a Russian city near the Ukraine border.

No doubt the Kremlin will spin that into why their 'special military operation' in Ukraine is necessary, but good to see that Russians are getting a taste of the war now.

The Russians are bombing their own facilities now ( and missing! ).

Russia bombs own Snake Island facilities after error

Here is another interesting line from defence analyst Michael Clarke, who spoke to Kay Burley about the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Clarke said after Russian forces made their high-profile retreat from Snake Island, near the Black Sea port city of Odesa, they left "defence missile batteries and one of their radars intact, which they shouldn't have done".

This is how the story concluded, according to Clarke...

"The following day, they tried to bomb their own facility so the Ukrainians couldn't use and they dropped four bombs and missed with three of them hit with one of them. Three fell in the sea. One of them fell on the island.

"It's not clear whether that facility is still operational, whether they did hit what they were aiming at on the island."

Clarke said the Ukrainians "probably won't occupy the island in any force because anyone on Snake Island is vulnerable to some sort of attack, but certainly the Russians now don't have it and it makes Odesa that little bit safer".

Odesa is the main port into Ukraine and has long thought to have been a key strategic target for Vladimir Putin along the southern Black Sea coast.

So how did Ukraine manage to recapture the island that was taken in the early days of the invasion?

Clarke explained: "It was just just within artillery range of these new guns that the Ukrainians have got - almost certainly from the French, 155 millimetre ones with a special shell, which gives a little bit of extra range.

"And although the Russians had air defence and missile defence, there's no defence against artillery shells. They are too small and they travel too quickly. And so Ukraine just bombarded them with artillery on Snake Island to the point where the Russians simply couldn't stay and they left last week."

Speaking on the ongoing mission to get grain out of Ukraine, the former director of the Royal United Services Institute said an international body such as the UN could "go in and take the grain out and protect convoys going in and out".

"That's another possibility. It's the only way it might work. But very, very dangerous. And it would require some demining," he added.

Interesting. America is carrying the lion’s share as expected, but to a far greater extent than I realised. Europe, including the U.K. isn’t pulling its weight.

In terms of what these numbers mean in money terms, the U.K. has contributed about £3.7bn. The annual NHS and social security budget is about £190bn. Track and trace failure cost what, £34bn?

So in real terms, help to Ukraine by the U.K. has been minimal, despite Johnson’s tub thumping rhetoric. No wonder Putin laughs at us.

As for the EU, they’ve spent £93bn on Russian energy since the war began. It has spent a pathetic £5bn on support for Ukraine, of which France’s contribution is a meagre £0.16bn. Still, at least Macron and the Italian bloke (£0.11bn) won’t be on Putin’s naughty step when Ukraine is crushed.

If everyone was doing as much as the Baltic trio and Poland, Russia would be in trouble. In percentage terms, Poland is donating about 2.5 times what the UK does, It's about 4 times more from Estonia and Latvia versus UK contributions.

This is slightly old data, but the proportions are still similar now.

France and Germany's contributions are pretty pathetic TBH.

All the other stats reflect those you posted and % of GDP is a good measure.

It’s interesting that Europe as a whole is doing far less than the US, despite it being Europe that’s threatened.

The countries most directly threatened by Putin are stepping up, especially Poland who have dealt with the lions share of refugees.

The UKs effort is typical Johnson. All talk, show, no real content. A lame response.

As for France, Italy and Germany, it’s clear where their sympathies lie. Shiny badges, concerned expressions and polished lecterns cannot disguise the fact that their support for Ukraine just isn’t there in a material sense. Wafty promises about joining the EU when they know Ukraine won’t exist are cheap, easy and worthless.

Awful, sad pictures. People who just want to live out their lives extinguished by a madman. I know most people are bored with Ukraine and get desensitised to pictures like this, but I don’t.

Ok, despite Zelenski’s claim I doubt Russia targeted a shopping mall. They’re not that good. More likely they were firing at something else or just indiscriminately. This is irrelevant. They don’t care what they do or the number of people that have to die in pursuit of territory. It

doesn’t matter whether it’s called a war crime, a crime against humanity or anything else. He and his poodles need to be held to account for this. If Milosevic can reside in a prison cell for Serbia’s efforts, so should the little man with a weak chin.

The world should be telling Russia that while this dreadful creature is there, reconciliation will never happen and Russia will be de-linked economically. Not going to happen though. No chance. Western greed, self interest, denial, Chinese ambitions, Indian complicity guarantees Russias economic security and backs their ambitions.

Seems the sanctions are hurting a little bit ( along with Ukrainian stiff resistance ).
