I find it so difficult to read these. It shouldn't be easy for us to and it is important that we continue to be aware of what is going on. Thanks for sharing.

And, everyone, look after your own emotional and mental health.

That’s awful though sadly, no surprise.

There are plenty of calls in Russia for the Mariupol defenders to be executed and I see they’ve been stowed away in a prison. My guess is that they’ll be held until Ukraine decides on its approach to Russian soldiers accused of war crimes.

The coverage of the war is wall to wall in Russia and appears on the outside to be almost fantasy land propaganda. Ok, the west is also subject to propaganda, but the difference is the 100s of different media outlets, most of which are not state controlled.

It reads as if in Russia, people believe and follow what they told, but there is a conversation out there they cannot have. It seems like the only thing that will make a difference is coffins and poverty.

Lastly, I’m pleased to see Putin getting more involved in military decisions. It really won’t help. It reminds me of Hitler’s fantasy meddling and indeed Churchill’s, which was usually catastrophic too.

Following Russia’s slightly pyrrhic victory at Mariupol/the south this is an interesting summary of where the war is:

https://www.vox.com/2022/5/17/23037687/mariupol-evacuation-ukraine-russia

And this is the personal side of it. Loss for a war that only a few insane people wanted. I’m sure they think it’s worth it, but that’s part of what makes them insane. I hope Putin’s death is soon, slow and excruciating.

It looks like the NYT has footage of people being led across to a building to be executed in Bucha.

So we have shootings of civilians, militia, prisoners, rape, deportations of 1000s of people, torture, starvation, murder, threats of nuclear war, indiscriminate shelling and missiles, targeted shelling/missiles, destruction, prevention of humanitarian aid, lies, misinformation, blackmail.

The Russian military may now be pushing the Ukrainians back with better use of combined artillery, air and ground troops, but the legacy of this ought to haunt them for years to come. These are war crimes; crimes against humanity.

Is the west going to support Ukraine just enough to die slowly? Through fear of Putin’s madness and nuclear stockpile, appeasement still seems to be to me the primary policy objective for too many influential countries.

Interesting. And so sad.

Of course, while you can clean up some of the mess, incinerate plenty in the mobile crematoria, bury the rest, and imprison 1000s of people the other side of Russia, as the Russians have been doing in Mariupol, there are too many witnesses, too many images. The Russian army also appears too ill disciplined. Their only real solution to hiding their crimes against humanity is counter claim and propaganda, which they will use in ever increasing volume.

You can add kidnapping EMT personnel to your list.

This woman and her driver were captured by the Russians and are missing for over two months.

It is horrific. I did read about the medic with the camera and her driver. I suspect if they found a camera on her they’ve already been executed and disposed of. I really hope not. What brave people.

“It reads as if in Russia, people believe and follow what they told“. It’s easy to understand how that happens. We see a bit of it here, with the press inventing false enemies ‘attacking’ us - refugees, the EU… Imagine if we were in a real war, the nationalistic propaganda and chest thumping would be off the charts. And people would continue to fall for it.

There are lots of brave Russians who see through Putin’s lies, but whether there are enough of them to have an impact I’ve no idea. Let’s hope so.

We are already subject to propaganda. It looks like Russia has had a very good week. The west is turning on itself with disputes (U.K./EU, U.K./US, Sweden/Finland and Turkey over Nato), collapsing stock markets.

Meanwhile, EU energy billions roll in and Russias surplus grows. Russias gained a significant victory in Mariupol, it’s now steady advance in the east thanks to better tactics and the grinding down of Ukraines forces. Putin will be much happier. This isn’t being reported that way.

However, the media is free to report how it wishes and on domestic stuff there is challenge to the dominant ‘Right’ media. That isn’t the case in Russia. Access is limited largely to state media as Putin in his fear has shut the rest down. Open media is something Russia has has only for a relatively small period since it was invented and people questioning Putin are few. I was chatting to some ex military the other day who’d had contact with the Russians in recent decades. Their view of the world is clearly different. I need to read a lot more about them tbh.

Would the U.K. govt control all media in war? It wouldn’t be able to. In ww2 it controlled the written stuff, thanks to its limitations in scale, and the BBC, but even then nobody was arrested for listening to William Joyce. Despite restrictions on media, strike levels in Britain in WW2 were phenomenal and the people didn’t always do as it was told (e,g. not using the underground for air raid protection).

Would people challenge U.K. actions in war? Not the people doing the job, but after Iraq and Afghanistan they would the politicians, in my opinion.

Suspect she is still alive. The video was handed over before she was captured and the Russians were aware of her popularity. The Russian tactic of kidnapping local officials etc has come unstuck with the fact that the Ukrainians have plenty of captured Russian soldiers. The Russians may easily murder local civilians but high profile people will be kept prisoner for exchanges.

Copied from the Internet to get the wording right:

‘December 13, 1797, Heinrich Heine is born. This German poet once observed that wherever books are burned, people are burned, too, in the end. His words turned out to be prophetic, as his own books would be burnt by the Nazis during the 1930s’

Heine was right. And nothing has changed.

As an avid reader and having an interest in history, I hate to see this. Much of Britain’s history was lost through vandalism of this kind from the Vikings, to Henry 8th and the destruction of the Monasteries to Cromwell and the Protectorate. But for these people, the Dark Ages would not be so named.

Sacrilege like this can be added to Russia’s list of crimes.

The stooges on this Russian programme are up there with the best of the Nazi stuff, but with more misinformation. I particularly enjoyed their obvious delight at the destruction of the U.K. and the tidal wave one. So idiotic, it reminded me of a Roger Moore James Bond film.

One idiot when the idea of a nuclear Holocaust was mooted said that we’ve all got to die sometime. The words of an idiot that doesn’t believe it’ll be them and certainly a person that hasn’t seen what bad stuff looks like.

I am curious as to how long they can keep going, while the bodies arrive home. I guess while they gradually are grinding Ukraine down, a fair while yet.

Yes, thanks for keeping this thread going EG. It’s important.

How true these figures are is anyone's guess but probably not that far off.

Russians have moved to the artillery and missile phase so the troop casualties will not increase at the current rate.
