The West offered support to Ukraine to fight - and have now abandoned them.

Its a bit more nuanced than that.

The Ukrainians were constantly looking for heavier artillery to counter the Russian advantage and they are getting it but not quickly enough. There is also a bit of politicking going on still.
https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/us-will-not-send-ukraine-rocket-systems-tha

I was just looking at a Sky report from the front-line in Donbas where the Ukrainian army were showing off their British donated tank busters. Unfortunately the Russian tanks were 3km away and they were of no use to them in this situation.

The EU petrol ban hold up is another example of a desire to help Ukraine but not wanting to destroy your own country plus Urban is being a d1ck.

All that said that if the Ukrainians can keep holding out ( Russians are throwing everything at Donbas but are progressing slowly ) the Russian antique tanks will grind to a halt.

While interesting this only a secondary ( or maybe a thirdly ) concern of the war. Putin's empire building and starving the world preceed this.

Putin just playing games with the EU regarding the blockade.

Interesting articles, particularly the Newsweek one. The Russians have a good point over supply of natural resources, including grain. It’s theirs to export or keep, whether it be oil, gas or wheat. From their perspective the west can’t it both ways imposing sanctions on the one hand and wanting cheap resources on the other.

I never realised how dependant the world was on Russias resources (that now includes what was Ukraine’s). The whole set up of the global economy will need to change if the west wants to reduce reliance on Russia.

In other news today, Biden. What exactly is he doing about Ukraine? It really does look like slow death for that country while he wants to look like he is doing something is the policy. Either that or his weak prewar policy of appeasement/proportionate response is back on the table. He appears so scared of what Putin might do he’s letting him run the agenda - as he’s basically done since February.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/may/30/biden-will-not-supply-ukraine-with

The implication of not allowing kit that can hit inside Russia to appease them, means for Putin certainty that unless he directly attacks the US, under no circumstances will the US stop his ambitions. Ukraine, a sovereign country, is being smashed acre by acre. The US has the means to help them hit back, but refuses that help on the basis that it might upset Putin. The west, particularly the EU, pump £1bn a day into Russia’s economy.

The war chest is overflowing. Poor old Zelenski must wonder which side the west is truly on.

The "denazification" of the country involving setting up camps for Ukrainians. How are they going to be released? It's got to be a condition of the end of the war. This is reminiscent of the holocaust.

I doubt they will be going home ever. There is plenty of room in Russia for forced labour/slaves. Removing people that don’t matter is actually a really good way of absorbing a country. Especially children who can be more easily re-educated or disposed of if they don’t conform.

Meanwhile, I noticed the following today:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-61607410

Torture and wanton cruelty. Normally this sort of thing would rate the front page. Not any more. The crimes against humanity being conducted in Ukraine just aren’t as important or juicy as soon-to-be-in-history’s-dustbin Johnson’s lockdown booze ups.

It’s a strange world we live in.

Buried in the BBC website:

‘Ukrainian volunteers and officials who refuse to collaborate with Russian authorities in the occupied city of Mariupol and nearby villages are being imprisoned and executed, BBC Monitoring reports the Mariupol city council saying.

A Telegram post from the authority, which cites mayor Vadym Boychenko, says a "fake DPR [self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic] court" has sentenced the head of one coastal Azov village to 10 years in prison while at least one civil servant has been executed by shooting.

Dozens of volunteers, who helped evacuate residents and tried to deliver food and water to the blockaded city in March and April, are also being held in Olenivka prison, the city council says.

"A Ukrainian judge is also awaiting a verdict from the fake republic. There are reports of her being tortured," it adds.’

Nobody is interested, sadly.

Ok, very few people are interested. That’s why todays headlines on the BBC page are next to a story about the Queen Mother’s old Daimler, beneath Harry and Megan and oversized pigeons. Yes, there’s a tab for it but I’ll be surprised if it’s there too much longer.

I noticed today that there is a Guardian article about how much the leadership did in advance of the invasion and whether they buried their heads in the sand re US (and other intel agencies) warnings.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/jun/03/ukraine-russia-war-ukrainians-ques

It reads like the Ukrainians were in denial and just wanted it all to go away. Can’t say I blame them. Interestingly, while their country is being smashed, the west and its media now want it all to go away and get back to normal.

You are and thanks for that. It’s important. Attached is an interesting article on Russia’s energy sales

https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-make-more-money-off-energy-exports-thanks

This is the key to Russia’s war in my view. Kit and men can be replaced. Putin and co follow in a long line of Russians to whom lives don’t matter. In fact, the more that die the better. Same principle that Stalin used which is why WW2 was fought the way it was.

Another interesting article is about Odessa and plans for de-Russification. It’s in complete contrast to the the captured areas on the coast that are undergoing re-Russification. Statues, street names, people moved out etc.

"Kit and men can be replaced".

Awful isn't it, just a numbers game.

The whole age old concept of cannon fodder with no compassion for one's own side let alone the opposition. When a leader is that inherently wicked you're up against it.

It’s disgusting, Jeera. I suspect half the conscripts out there don’t know where they are or why. They are of no value to Putin. Cannon fodder. Of course, there a long history of this going back to the Czars.

I had hoped in 21st century that the Russian people would be more enlightened having ‘seen’ the alternative over recent years through media, but it would seem Putin’s growing control over 20 years and unquestioning loyalty has stopped that. Public support is overwhelming. I wonder what they think privately? Let’s face it, public objection and you’d better ship out quickly or face a dire future.

Trials in Stalin’s Russia consisted of the sentence being read out and a short walk out of the back door. Bang. That’s if you were lucky. Under the quota system, people were often just mown down in forests, herded into buildings and set alight etc in the agreed numbers, or more if an official wanted to impress.

Yes, the anti Putin people in Russia are up against it and so is the west. He’s a wicked man supported by a mixture of wicked and weak people.

Interesting article on BBC today:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-61691816

Macron is supported by Italy and while they’ve promised a few things, the Germans. To say ‘don’t humiliate Russia’ is the same as saying please give Putin what he wants. Macron is the only important western leader to be in regular dialogue with Putin. Is this a good or bad thing?

An end to this insane war and the killing that goes with it would be brilliant, but at any price? If a negotiated settlement, or surrender as it would/will truly be desirable? If or more likely when Russia finishes taking what it wants, does that make Europe safer or does it just mean the three countries get their cheap energy back, trade and arms sales to Russia up and running?

Russia’s aggression is theirs alone. They’ve piled in on this after a long build up and clearly have a strategy for their other neighbours too. EU money from energy sales is piling in and Putin is laughing all the way to the bank. Deaths? Like he cares about that.

I suspect Macron’s ‘statesmanship’ is very much driven by self interest. Ukraine? Who cares. Stopping Putin? Clearly he’s a man Macron thinks ‘he can do business with’. Literally.

Perhaps, above all Western leaders, Macron is and always has been a business man who will act in what he perceives to be in the best (short term) interests of business. Vaccuous arse.

Edit....and as for Draghi...
"Mario Draghi OMRI (Italian: [ˈmaːrjo ˈdraːɡi]; born 3 September 1947) is an Italian politician, economist, banker, former professor and civil servant who has been serving as the prime minister of Italy since 2021.[1][2] Prior to his appointment as prime minister, he served as President of the European Central Bank (ECB) between 2011 and 2019. Draghi was also Chair of the Financial Stability Board between 2009 and 2011, and Governor of the Bank of Italy between 2006 and 2011.[3]"

....well I think we all know who he's still working for.

Russian senior officers: they do seem to be losing a few.

https://www.newsweek.com/russian-general-roman-kutuzov-killed-luhansk-donbas-ukr

Sensible or stupid? I guess it does happen in WW1 style wars. Contrary to popular Blackadder perceptions, senior officers did sometimes lose their lives in that war. Major-General Edward Ingouville-Williams (‘Inky Bill’) commanded the new 34 Division at the Battle of the Somme and was killed in an artillery barrage on 22 July 1916 while personally doing some reconnaissance the week before his division attacked near Mametz Wood.

I like the bit

"Major General Roman Kutuzov, Commander of the 1st Army Corps (Orcs) of the [DPR], has been officially denazified and demilitarized”

‘Denazified and demilitarized’ is certainly a more interesting way of saying dead, offed, liquidate, bumped off, sent to hell.
