Latest on Russia swallowing of Ukraine, bar the sentencing to death of 3 prisoners today.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/jun/06/russia-ukraine-war-what-we-know-on

It looks like Sievierodonetsk will soon fall and that will give Russia the so called ‘disputed’ areas. With victory there, it’s a question of whether they take Odessa first or resume the assault on Kyiv.

I like Putin’s threat about the west providing long range weapons. As if Russia isn’t smashing every corner of a sovereign country already.

An interesting view on what the future holds. Not sure the policy of appeasement and allowing Ukraine do slowly die and hoping to get back to normal is going to work.

“Russia will live better in ten years.” Solovyov surmised: “Most importantly, we now know what awaits us in the coming years: returning and fortifying [lost lands].”

Where have we heard sentiments like that before?

Imperial ambitions have been going 1000s of years. This is the latest. They have the might and the will to do as they please, but only if the west stays asleep.

While Ukraine is allowed to die, Russia accumulates wealth through energy sales and countries like France and Germany grovel about with appeasement noises (and trade resumption), the ogre will be encouraged. He’s not going away.

The Guardian piece on western confusion and weakness is I think spot on.

Putin currently holds the initiative and the cards. It didn’t have to be this way.

It’s awful. Russia filtration system is interesting and I suspect will get more thorough as the conquest concludes.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/jun/12/ukrainians-who-fled-to-georgia-rev

On a more immediate note, Ukraine fears that western support will fade as people lose interest. They are spot on.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/jun/12/ukraine-fears-western-support-will

When you look at Biden, he’s not interested. France? Basically grovelling to Putin along with Germany for post war trade. Johnson? Since when did he retain interest in anything other than his own personal wealth? Putin won’t forgive him even if he gets on bended knee, but he’ll be gone within two years anyway.

Russia is crushing Ukraine and I suspect is suffering minimal casualties by using artillery, cluster munitions, air power. It controls oil and grain. The money for the former is rolling in, much from the EU. Putin through leverage in OPEC in choking supply is helping drive western economies into recession. In Russia, the rouble has climbed, unemployment is falling and inflation is just about zero.

When Ukraine is gone, there will be a rush to embrace Putin and restore normal relations. Atrocities, sanctions, killings, belligerence quietly forgotten. This is the game Russia is playing.

The Ukrainians are well aware of the political backsliding and have sent Ruslan Stefanchuk around the governments of Europe drumming up support. He is focused on EU membership because this ties these governments to Ukraine.

Note he is appealing to the baser instincts.

It’s depressingly awful. On the one hand they are doing this sort of stuff and Germany is making promises it has no intention of fulfilling and on the other it’s all smiles about Ukraine joining the EU - when they know full well there will be no Ukraine to join anything.

I suspect France and Germany’s long chats with Putin are more about future trade than anything else. I don’t think the old policy of appeasement has gone away, despite its obvious failure.

If I was Polish, Czech or Baltic states I’d be very worried.

Macron is a fekkin snake.

Put it this way, when Putin holds his victory parade, Macron Scholz and the Italian leader should be in line for front row seats and whopping trade deals. For example, French made optics for Russia’s tanks and German parts for their vehicles. These were being supplied until after the war started.

They cleverly got around 2014 sanctions by using existing contracts. It’s a amazing what you can do for your friends when you try and I’ve no doubt they’ll be there when the contracts are handed out.

This has all the hallmarks of Stalin and Hitler’s regimes. Meanwhile, on ‘filtration’

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-61683513

The aim is to dismember, crush and absorb Ukraine. I noticed the new sign for Mariupol painted in Russia’s colours. I’ve no doubt the name will be changed one day along with many others.

Meanwhile, Germany’s contribution is to moan about Russia pushing up Energy prices. I see Macron, Scholz and Draghi have gone to meet Zelenski. Macron of course is facing parliamentary elections and wants to play Statesman. Scholz? His reputation needs a bit of bolstering and I suspect the Italian bloke has been dragged along to make it all look strong and unified.

If I was Zelenski, I’d be thanking them for helping out Russia by buying all that gas and oil at a discounted rate after the war started when other countries stopped importing and the £1bn a day into Putin’s coffers since - and leave it at that.

This show of solidarity with Ukraine is laughably shallow. I think Mick McCarthy would describe it as ‘milky’.

Nice to see they’ve got so much to laugh and joke about. Mind you, filling their boots with cheap oil and gas while others paid over the odds is a bit of a giggle, as is watching other countries try and support Ukraine while you get your future business sorted out with uncle Vladimir.

Interesting how Europe’s President, leader and no 1 statesman Macron sits at the end of the table holding court. I imagine the conversation was very much around ‘let’s look concerned, make a few empty promises, get the pictures done, hopefully with a bit of rubble behind and home for tea and medals’ and a quick check after with Vladykins that he was ok with it.

Along with France, Belgium and the Netherlands you'd think these would be the nations showing the most empathy for the invasion's victims.

They seem to suffer the same problems finding suitable candidates for leadership as us and the States do.

You'd think from a few billion people we could collectively do a bit better.
