Le Tiss is not in the same category as the others.

I wouldn't put Ronaldo in the debate based on position he played. He also didn't have the natural talent like De Bruyne has, and I'd say the same about Le Tissier despite him being before my time. Perhaps unfair? For passing and crossing I don't think anyone compares to De Bruyne.

Plus he's a total mentalist. (n/t) on 20:27 - Apr 26 with 2102 views | Bloots |

I greatly dislike his views on most topics on which he has expressed a view. However, although certainly not the best midfielder he was exciting and rather spectacular. As I have said on here before he is the only opposition player I can recall getting an ovation from our fans when he went over to take a corner at the North Stand end.

Surely Giggs, Cantona, Ginola, Salah even also have to be in that conversation, Vialli and Zola too even if they were a touch past their prime, Bergkamp

He had outstanding moments, but wouldnt make the Top 50 of Premier League midfielders.

Indeed, and difficult to compare when the roles are not identical too. For passing alone, De Bruyne is above many of those. For leadership and goal scoring many of the others are ahead of De Bruyne and then for tackling and interceptions a different set are there. And then again the game has changed so much too.

He single-handedly kept Southampton in the Premier League several seasons. Put him in a better side and he would have been even more impressive. He was a leader as well as a very talented player. I would be surprised if many who actually played with him wouldn't put him in their top 50.

Happy to agree to differ. Easily 50 better midfielders in Prem history. He did score some amazing goals though.

All of these were forwards...Best too. KdB is probably the best passing midfielder ever, but Gerrard, Viera, Keane, Wark, Souness, Lampard, Robson were all of similar standard as midfielders and better than KdB at certain things. [Post edited 27 Apr 2022 8:16]

If you were to draw up a list of top midfielders from the top flight in 1980/81, Wark would be a similar position to where De Bruyne is on that list today. Don't think Wark had the passing range, which is why we needed the Dutch Duo, but he was one of the best in the division at the time. That first goal from last night was very Warkesque.

Keane as a player was great. A proper destroyer that could also play. People would raise their game with him in the team too as he wouldn't allow for passengers. Imagine Fernandes trying to whine if Keane was in midfield lol.
