Türkiye - tipping 17:25 - May 3 with 2653 views | Zx1988 | Well-travelled TWTD folks: The present Mrs Zx and I have booked an all-inclusive trip to Türkiye next month. The usual percentage-based tipping conventions probably won't apply, given the board basis, so do any of you who have been recently have any thoughts on tipping convention with regards to how much and when/how frequently? Given how significantly the Lira appears to have tanked in the last 6-12 months, I'm loath to rely too much on older articles found online, which may be based on a more buoyant Lira than at present.

Türkiye - tipping on 14:10 - May 5 with 442 views | Lower_North | I'm going to Fethiye next month. I'll be tipping generously. Feel sorry for them, hardly any visitors in the last 2 years and the Lira has gone through the floor..

Türkiye - tipping on 09:11 - May 4 by Zx1988 | Thanks for this, jontysnut; it ties in broadly with what I'd been reading. Did you find that there was an element of receiving better service if you were seen to have contributed to the tip box, or tipped the service staff directly, or was it more along the British lines of tipping being seen as a recognition of good service rather than a prerequisite for it? Don't get me wrong, I abhor 'mandatory' tipping in all its forms, but if it means the difference between a good drink at the first time of asking, or waiting half an hour for some watered-down swill, I know which side I'm on! |
I didn't notice much difference, most places I've been staff are pretty good regardless. Mind you I make sure someone sees me sticking something in! I'm sure it's all shared out to include kitchen workers, cleaners etc. Being polite and interested in them and their country goes a long way as does the odd please and thank you in Turkish. Probably better of bunging the sun bed guys!

Türkiye - tipping on 11:38 - May 5 by BanksterDebtSlave | With inflation today reported at 70% it may be a good idea to eat any meals really fast and I would imagine any tips would be welcome! |
Ouch! Based on that, should I be buying Lira now, or waiting as long as possible?

Türkiye - tipping on 17:47 - May 3 by MattinLondon | Haggling really pisses me off. Tell me the price, if it’s too expensive then I won’t buy it, if it’s a fair price then I will. It’s on par with a toddler or small child trying to negotiate a deal - just a waste of time. And it just encourages people to act like a bell end. Also, tipping annoys me. I remember being in America and the waitress made a point of saying that in America we are expected to tip. Just pay the staff properly and get rid of it - and over here it seems to be getting more like that in the sense that tipping jars seem to be every where. I always add on a couple of pounds to the hairdressers and round up for taxis but just for making a hot chocolate, f**k off. Rant over. |
Living in Canada it is a bit of a culture shock. Having to tip at places. Particularly noticeable when there is no additional service. Eg, I'm paying you to pour me a beer, yet you want a tip because you are pouring it. I went to a fancy restaurant and the food and service was bad and people still expected me to tip. 5% was seen as an amount to be making a point. I didn't tip. It got me thinking though. I go to a cheap Pho restaurant run by a family relatively often and I used to resent paying a tip there. But after that experience I was thinking that even if I paid 5% in protest, it would have been more than I tip at this Pho place. So now I generally tip the lowest I can when I'm already paying a premium and more favourably at places where it is independent. I also have no patience for tipping at a Subway! Or other similar places. Or anywhere that demands a tip before I consume what I've paid for. I have a Brazilian friend, and he was telling me how when he first arrived he got a round of drinks. Went back later to get another round and the staff refused to serve him as he didn't tip the first time!! Wrong on many levels. Not part of your culture, your not providing an additional service such as waiting on a table, tip is by definition a "gift" not a right. Good luck not tipping though, if you want to make something a regular experience. Last rant/observation is takeaway charging delivery fee, service and expecting tip. I say the last one... But you also have the situation where when you pay, people will then ask you what you are doing and be overly friendly, and some people just lap it up. It's clear it is just sales to get you to tip more.
