Bids of £6million+ now needed to acquire Maradona's 'HandOfGod' shirt by Ryorry 4 May 2022 4:42
In case anyone was thinking of bidding in the live auction [grin]

Overnight news reports are that online bids so far have taken it to this new level (which seems an obscene amount of money to me, I just hope Hodge gives some of the proceeds to charity)

Am I right in saying that this was one of a set of shirts that Argentina bought from some local sports shop and sewed their badges onto because there was a colour clash with England and they were the 'away' team?

I remember watching an interview with Steve Hodge many years ago where he said that he had the shirt and it was locked away in a secure vault. I always thought that was a bit over the top until now.

Something strangely poetic ? that it was Hodge one of the more obscure players (I actually had forgot of his existence) who had the shirt rather than someone who was more ''known''

Actually Hodge was a pretty good player at Forest. Also played for Spurs and Villa.

True,true...but when you look at that squad he's among the half of it that if you showed anyone under 30 that's in to footy they'd be like ....who ?
Thing I never noticed was the crowd size ... 115,000 Wow !! .. In reality that would have been a few thousand more too no doubt.

Won't need to be doing co-commentary on Radio Nottingham any more that's for certain. I was chatting to him when he was here a couple of years back, seemed a nice bloke.

Is this going to be your new lame claim to fame at TWTD soirees? "I once chatted to the bloke with the really expensive footy shirt" is pretty niche, but a good'un.

Despite failing to chop him down twice for that second goal, Terry Butcher was probably far too p*ssed off with him to try to claim his shirt.

I read today from one of his family that the shirt is actually not the one he handballed in as it was his "first half" shirt...................How true that is I don't know.

If Terry had swapped with him - which as you say he wouldn't have done - it would have been burnt long before now I'm sure.

Not sure about that, but I heard a collected interviewed on the radio who said they can’t even guarantee this was the short worn. There’s every chance he changed shirts at half time (as a lot did) and this particular shirt could be from either half.

It's been verified as the genuinely "correct" shirt by experts from one of the major auction houses who specialise in provenance. They examined details of the stitching, variations in colour etc. between 1st & 2nd half shirts (He did change at h-t.). It's in the link I posted on my thread.

I’m sure the major auction house had nothing to gain from their expert verifying it.

I seem to recall Terry being interviewed years later and being asked if he’d shake Maradona’s hand. He replied ‘I’d shake his throat’

BTW, I like your Steve Hodge story. I’ve seen his ball bag.
We parked next to each other in Nottingham and were going to our respective junior football matches. His bag was supplied by Notts County, mine Mitre. True story bruv.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

Indeed, Terry still feels very aggrieved to this day. SH was on Life's a Pitch with us and I chatted to him later about Sir Bob and Cloughie as he played for them both. Didn't think Cloughie would be able to manage at the top level now as the relationship between players and managers has changed.

The usual commission from the sale no doubt. And plenty to lose if they got it wrong too - ie their reputation & good name.

But don’t you think that great managers are great because they can adapt their approach to individual players? I’m pretty sure that Clough could adapt to the modern game in terms of how to get the best out of players as well as utilising his style to modern tactics. In the same way that SBR only used and brought in very few players during his time here - but later at Barca, Newcastle he utilised the rotation system.

Saying all that, maybe Clough wouldn’t suit the modern approach of transfer committees and other people identifying players. He was much more hands on wasn’t he?

Yeah, the guy could easily be wrong as he wasn't speaking from a position of knowledge. It seems strange that the family are adamant it's not the one and they know who has the 'real' 2nd half shirt, but they could have their own reasons to be saying that.

Given all the cameras around you'd think there would be either film or photos of Hodge and Maradona swapping shirts at the end - that would clear it up 100% and put an end to any conspiracies. As you say though, Sotheby's aren't going to be winging this - they will have done their due diligence to protect their name. It sounds like there are genuine distinctions between the 2 shirts that are easy enough to spot.
