Russell Osman, and appearances 10:19 - May 5 with 2563 views | BluePG | I tried, and failed, to Google the answer to the above/below, however I heard this morning that Liverpool will play every fixture available to them this season. In these days of ‘big’ clubs putting out reserve teams in early cup rounds, it’s unlikely that there will be any ever-presents, which got me thinking about Osman’s insane season in the early eighties. Am I right in saying that he played every Ipswich game, and some England games also? Is/was that some kind of record for an individual? Was just before my time I’m afraid and my Men Who Made The Town book is in my parents’ loft!

Also, in Matt Holland's time here he started every single league game bar one where he was on international duty - think he only was on bench for a couple of cup ties as well

231 appearances in just 4 seasons from 78/79 to 81/82 and another 87 in the next 2 seasons as well. That is mad.

And then Bobby Ferguson would not pick him even for our second leg League Cup tie against Norwich defending a 1 - 1 draw. Sat in the stands. But then he preferred Tommy Parkin to O'Callaghan. The former went on a free to Bury Town and the latter back to Millwall for a £100k, says it all.

And in those days he would have played the whole game in nearly all if not all the games. In these days of 3 to 5 substitutions per game, how many do? | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Not detracting from that at all as that is very true, but these days, you rarely seem to change the central defenders very often in tactical substitutions, so mostly they do play the full game.

Yes that's true, central defenders are probably the exceptions in outfield players in usually playing the full game.
Russell Osman, and appearances on 14:32 - May 5 with 2149 views | Churchman | Russell Osman was a really good player. He was slightly overshadowed by playing partner Butcher and his predecessors Beattie and Hunter, but anyone who saw him play will tell you just how good he was. Athletic, mobile, good in the tackle, in the air and on the ground, nobody took liberties with Osman. He could dish it out when necessary. He nearly played in the 1978 Final of course, with doubts over Beattie and Hunter’s fitness. He would not have let us down if he’d have played.

Town played 319 games when Matt Holland was at the club - he played in 314 of them (311 starts and 3 subs). He missed a league game at Gillingham just before he left in 2003 due to international duty but started all the others, as you say. He was rested for the League Cup games at Crewe (2001/02) and at home to Brighton and Middlesbrough (02/03), and the FA Cup tie at Dagenham & Redbridge (01/02). He started 173 consecutive games after signing and altogether played 223 consecutive games until that Crewe tie (222 starts, 1 sub).

Thanks for the detail on that, wasn't sure on the cups but that league record is incredible - I haven't got the stats for previous seasons but in his last 3 here i.e. 2000/01, 2001/02 and 2002/03 he only missed the one game whilst on duty, plus 41 minutes of football in 2001/02 when he went off early in the home opener v Man U. In his first season at Charlton he subsequently missed just 12 minutes of league football In that period he also played every minute at the 2002 WC [Post edited 5 May 2022 14:59]

And a brief look online at Pride of Anglia and that Man U game was the only one he was ever subbed off for us in the league. Only really Luke Chambers in recent years who has had anything like that level of consistency of being available - lucky or willing to put body on line more? Chambers missed 28 games in 9 seasons. 4-5 when dropped at the end of tenure under Cook; 5 after injury at Brentford and 5 or so when Lambert rotated making up the bulk of them - but still nothing like Holland's record [Post edited 5 May 2022 15:07]

Russell Osman, and appearances on 15:22 - May 5 with 2085 views | GeoffSentence | Lets not forget that his number of England caps (11) is the same number as that won by all Norwich players since time began (somewhere between 35 billion years and six and a half thousand years depending on your point of view)

Hopefully the passing of time will see Chambers get a little more respect. Always battled for us and captained us through some of the most turbulent times the club has ever seen.

He included Osman in a team of the best players he had played with, presumably at the expense of Butcher. On defender Osman, who made 55 appearances for Southampton between 1988 and 1992, Shearer said: "In all my career, he was the best two-footed player I ever played with. He was tough."
