It didn’t mean anything. In 1978, it was the ultimate day and the ultimate trophy, bar possibly the European Cup and even that was slightly odd, not on quite the same level, no build up etc etc.

It’s a generation thing. I know now that finishing one above the relegation zone is far more important than the FA Cup. So is having a big Arab owner prepared to buy success like Man C - great!

I’m just so glad I got to see something when it was truly special that cannot ever be taken away. Words cannot describe what it was like. For PJH and the lucky people of his generation, they witnessed something even more.

Was talking today with my shift partner, a Hammer about how it used to be, we were talking about 78 and 80. He said he looked up the TV coverage for 1980 and it started at 7.40 AM, it really was a massive deal and a massive day.

It was an incredible day; remember as a kid thinking how cool it was to have aerial shots of the team buses making their way to Wembley. And, did it ever rain on cup final day? Swear every final ever has been played in sunshine.

I thought it was really boring (today, not 1978 which I can just about remember). Modern 'top level' football seems to me to be really robotic and cynical, and even saw the old waggy finger crap from one of them. Mind you, I don't watch much 'top level' stuff and don't anticipate doing so until 2024, so it may be a lot more entertaining than I think.

However I quite enjoyed watching today's game, both sides really tried to win it and despite it being 0-0 was a decent game i thought.

Wasn't the Cup Final the only domestic game shown live on TV all season though? Surely that plays a role in the lack of gravitas the game has these days, not so much of a special occasion. I mean, Liverpool vs Chelsea alone has probably already been televised three times already this season. I love the cup final and would love for it to have the same significance it previously had (albeit long before I was born), but I don't think many can truly say that they'd be happy for all other live football on TV to go to recapture the special feeling of the Cup Final.

The extra time was rubbish, but is usually is as the teams are disrupted by substitutions & the core players are tired. Also, once you get to extra time, teams are understandably more wary of "losing" the game than trying to win it. However, I don't have a great alternative solution to settling a drawn game. If you went straight to penalties, often the weaker team would be likely to play negatively for 90 minutes. The "golden" or "silver" goal experiment also made things worse, as teams naturally focussed on not losing.

was I a kid we played 'Wembley' headers or volleys.

Maybe they could try a variation of that with 4 attackers vs 3 defenders and a keeper. Ball into the box and 4 touches to score with a header or volley
