Booing - a helpful guide 15:17 - May 16 with 2245 viewsSTYG

I'm confused having seen some of the newspaper headlines over the weekend.

I think I have it now.

So we can boo whoever we want, under freedom of speech, and football supporters are right to boo players taking the knee over BLM, even if it's because they are horrible racists, because of free speech allowing you to boo who you want.

Unless you boo the monarchy. In which case shame on you. You can't boo the royals, there's no such thing as freedom of speech.

Presumably though, the same newspapers, would have made an exception for Meghan Markle if she was still a royal, saying she can be booed under freedom of speech because of er... well... um... ahh they'll think of something.

It's almost as if there's an agenda here. But I can't quite grasp what it might be.

Can we still boo referees next season?

Booing is the ultimate form of slacktivism.
It basically says I disapprove of you but I can't actually be bothered to do anything about it other than make a silly noise.

To be fair you didn't need to post the tweets.

Just the profile picture and Union Jack in the username is all that's needed in times like this. We can depressingly guess the rest!

It's just about a step up from a DaveU downvote.

As opposed to what exactly?

A collective disapproval that made headlines and gammons foam at the mouth.

Please do tell us what you’ve got up your sleeve to overthrow the monarchy.

I’m going to arrange a carefully coordinated leaflet campaign with all volunteers wearing high-vis jackets. If that doesn’t overthrow the inbred royal family then nothing will.

On the side, I can’t stand the National Anthem as much as I can’t stand the concept of the royal family. But I still want England to win. And if some scousers want to boo it, then it’s up to them.

Sport to me is a side of National pride I don’t mind, even if by and large I still think borders are pointless exercise in boxing us in based on the bit of land the vessel that holds your consciousness fell out onto.

By and large change has to come from society itself, of which a part of that is booing the monarchy at a public event. That wouldn’t have happened 10 years ago. To abolish the monarchy there needs to be enough support to do it in the first place.

I also despise the word “Slacktivism”. Whilst I can agree a gesture politics can be cringe, it seems to be a term thrown around by those projecting the fact they’re doing F’all about anything.

Strictly speaking we don't actually have a national anthem. We have a royal anthem. GSTQ honours the monarch, not the country.

It is very sad (but far too frequently true) that our national flag has this association (indeed our national football team, etc as well).

As for when booing is right or wrong it is easy. If I agree with it then it is good, if I disagree then it is a disgrace and the perpetrators should be ashamed of themselves. That is generally fairly universally applied.

As a form of protest I suppose it appeals to the lowest common denominator in the intelligence stakes, but being inclusive and easy to copy is about all it’s got going for it.

The alternative could be something like presenting a compelling argument using real words? Maybe that’s a step too far for serial booers though.

Ps - although I do like a good boo of a dodgy ref, but only briefly before showing of my linguistic ability by calling him a w&nker!

The one thing in favour of our Royal Family is that we know what sort of loopy third-rater is our Head of State, and who the future ones are.

Think about who we might end up with if we had to elect a Head of State....
