And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

Perhaps the tories will use the Albert RN trick.

(Those of you not familiar with 1953s war films can look it up)

Just my luck! I'm familiar with all war films up until 1952 and also those from 1954 onwards, but I have not a clue about 1953.

I shall look it up with forth.

Edit: I am now in receipt of the relevant information. Didn't they use a similar ploy during parades in The Great Escape? Was all going frightfully well until the Hun wished George Cowley 'Good luck!" I think they used a dummy in Escape To Victory too - they called it Sylvester Stallone and put it in goal. All the Town players were better actors than Stallone, as was the hole in the bottom of the bath in the changing room.

Yep. If I was a male Tory MP in my 50s I’d make sure I sat right in the line of the cameras for every second they were on! As (rightly) this person won’t be named yet, speculation will be rife. But not on here obviously as we know better than to land Phil in the doodoo.

It may not be a question that can be answered but why is the name not released? Usually the accused gets named in rape cases don't they? Is it because currently there are no charges?

Once they're charged it's out in the public domain. We don't have secret courts in this country.

Interesting. I have never seen the idea of anonymity as a "secret court". It is a real issue with the potential for false accusations but, I guess, if the name is only released on charging rather than when arrested, then at least it is on the basis of sufficient evidence to persuade the CPS.

I'm pretty sure in the UK we'd only give the accused anonymity in the most extreme cases of national security, but I'd struggle to see the circumstances in which that would arise. The mere revelation of the accused's name would have to pose a credible threat to the lives of (probably) millions.

Anonymity for witnesses is a different matter.

Minors have been given it in murder cases - think Jamie Bulger's killers. The culprits were only named after being found guilty or through the press (I forget which).
