What is the point in VAR if it doesn’t pick things like this up? 07:02 - May 20 with 3683 viewsEly_Blue

If it was a penalty taken a yard from the spot or a goal kick taken from outside of the 6 yard box the officials wouldn’t allow it.

Not something the ref will see so not an obvious error.

Whilst I agree with you, if VAR did pick up on that sort of thing teams would be hounding for VAR for various reasons.

A clear and obvious mistake made by the assistant referee. If the AR’s mistakes don’t count, then the offside rule changes completely. Foul throw-ins are common but rarely penalised.

Jesus H, VAR is one of the worst things in football. You have to be a special kind of saddo to be demanding a goal is ruled out because someone’s foot was over the line on a throw in

I'd politely suggest if we were on the wrong end of a goal following a throw that blatantly illegal, you might feel different.

Let's not bother with any of the laws, then.

Why? Why is it any different to being offside by the same (or smaller) margin?

A corner isn’t allowed to be taken outside of the quadrant, a penalty isn’t given if it’s outside the box. If there was foul play in the build up to the goal it would have been called back, this is no different.

I’d say you are the “special kind of person “

That should be the rule for throw ins anyway. As long as one foot is on the line it shouldn't matter where the rest of you is. I would even want under arm throws to speed things up.

But someones toenail being offside is OK to call? haha

What level of the rules should we be abiding to.

Surely this is a clear and obvious error, though this doesn't even matter anymore. AFter the Man City handball vs Everton, i'm not sure anyone can rely on VAR!

Under arm throw ins were discussed a few (many) years ago.

No, I’d be questioning why we allowed the ball to be lifted into the box so easily and a player drift in unmarked from 30 yards out to easily volley in, rather than whining about a throw in which happened so far before it isn’t even included on the clip in the highlights

VAR giving offsides by a millimetre is also ridiculous

Have you even seen the goal in question? Absolutely laughable that anyone would think it should have been chalked off because of that

The linesman should indeed have noticed but he didn’t, these things happen. Maybe we should get VAR to check goalkeepers have placed the ball absolutely correctly for goal kicks too

How far back from a goal should VAR check for a clear and obvious error before deciding if it should be disallowed? 30 seconds? A minute? 10?

Alternatively, perhaps we could just leave the referees and linesman to try and apply the laws as best as they can and so be it

Indeed, at every corner kick there are probably several fouls committed by players on both sides. Do we want VAR to pick all of those out, or do we want the current system whereby referees only ever penalise a foul by an attacker?

Cool, we’ll delay the game every time there’s a goal kick then so the ref can run over to the six yard box, check the ball is placed correctly and then get back into position in the centre circle. Sounds great 👍🏻

Yes, VAR should absolutely not be used to check whether there was a marginal foul throw 30 seconds or whatever previous to a goal being scored and it’s utterly mad to think otherwise.

So you mean we should just leave the officials to do these things as best as they can from a distance as they have always done, like I’m suggesting then?

VAR is just an official checking footage of the match in real time. If it isn't noticed at the time and it has no direct involvement in the goal, then they aren't going to review it (nor should they).

Ah you mean like the offsides? Yeah VAR checks those in real time doesn’t it. Also the countless was it/wasn’t it handball decisions that get looked at from 10 angles in slo mo for 5 minutes!

If the player gained a clear advantage as he would have done in this case by being able to take the throw in from inside the playing area the yes it does have a direct impact. Not withstanding that effectively it’s a handball offence if we’re going to ignore the fact that his foot is a yard over the line. Let’s allow the same for corners, goal kicks and penalties shall we too?
