Colchester City then..... 09:47 - May 20 with 3549 viewspete81

There was some excitement about Ipswich going for City status a while ago....Tom Hunt told us we weren't allowed....

We'd soon get used to it. But yeah, I've no idea what benefits is would bring to the town, er city.

At least Colchester is really old and has some sort of claim to being a former capital.

It is all a load of Bollox though.

It suits Tom Hunt's agenda very well to be representing an angry little backwater — which Ipswich isn't and must not become.

There was a lot of chatter about being a city in the early 00's and it all fizzled out - I think that is the reason why Suffolk College botched their university status and became a satellite for the UEA for some time - because everyone in the council had a bone on for city status.

3 ‘cities’ in Essex now then. Who knew it was full of the “metropolitan elite” 🤣

Being a city would yield economic benefits through attractiveness for investment. Doesn’t mean the club would have had to change its name. Frustrated that Tom hunt had the say and not the people or the council who were for it.

Yep, you just have to look at the funding relatively local cities get compared to us.

Everyone was for it apart from Tom Hunt, sooner that w@nker is out of office here the better - is a stain on Ipswich. It's not party political either, you can guarantee that Ben Gummer would have been pushing us forwards for this status if he was still our MP.

There's a joke in here about them still winning something more recently than Norwich or Spurs, but I can't quite find it.

Colchester peaked about 2000 years ago when they were knocked outta the texaco cup quarter final by Norwich. Who themselves went on to participate and lose in the final that season. Still their greatest achievement. How's that?

councillors get paid more money, oh sorry my mistake the government gives city councils more development funds (ie taxpayer money) to spend with BID groups to improve the place.

Love it or hate it, MK is leading the way in the technology sector, also home of the Open University and the main hub for electric vehicle technology. Also... MK is showing growth where as many other towns are showing urban decline.

Chelmsford (2012), Southend-on-Sea and Colchester (both 2022) are all now cities, but Ipswich isn't.

Southend over Ipswich...

We wouldn't change the name of the club, anyway. Chelmsford City were known as such years before they became an actual city. Elgin City in Scotland are from Elgin, which isn't even a city. We will always be Ipswich Town. But city status for Ipswich would surely be a good thing.

Southend was rushed through in response to the death of David Amess - when you see the town's selected we'd have surely got it had Tom Hunt not just decided against it despite everyone wanting it
