I think I’m at the point where I would.

This is so stupid.

Inflation is very high and most of us aren't getting ANY pay rise. It's not about a rise above inflation, it's about doing the same job with a real terms pay cut.

Exactly - pay restraint after 14 years of no wage growth doesn't work either. Most people have very little disposable income so giving all of that to British Gas shareholders means thousands of small businesses (pubs, takeaways etc) will go to the wall because nobody will have money to spend in them.

Not to mention the mental health crisis from people forfeiting any form of enjoyment in their lives just to pay their energy bills. And they're the lucky ones because if nothing is done, for some people it won't even be a choice of heating or eating because neither will be affordable.

Yet all we have from the two Tory leadership candidates is nonsense about "woke" to pander to their base, most of whom will be completely unaffected by this crisis. Some of them will probably profit from it.

We don't have a wage-price spiral, we have a profit-price spiral. Most of the inflation today is caused by increases in profits, especially for energy firms.

We're going to need a much bigger windfall tax.

“We don't have a wage-price spiral, we have a profit-price spiral.”

We also have a commodity shortage exasperated by the Ukraine war. Profits aside, the price of natural gas has QUADRUPLED. Even if you remove the ~2pc profit in your gas bill you are going to feel the pain.

The issue here is the government have done f*** all to alleviate it. They should bring in a cap and pick up the rest of the cost.

Commodity costs have definitely gone up and you'd expect to see a rise from that but if profits had even stayed the same as they were at the end of 2021 the bills would be quite a bit lower.

BP profit margin ~ 4.5pc

Natural gas increase ~ 400pc

It might take 30 quid a month off but you’d still be paying thousands. In theory 50pc of your bill has quadrupled. Not a defence of the energy companies but I’m surprised so many are unaware of the underlying issue.

This is the case all across Europe. Even those that are nationalised have had to cap the cost and effectively sold at a loss with the taxpayer picking up the rest. Probably what should also happen here.
