The Daily Mail obviously either haven't read the #SueGrayReport or they have and are deliberately ignoring the wine on the walls, the fighting, the vomiting, people being rude to security and cleaning staff, etc etc. They're nothing more than a Tory propaganda rag at this stage.
Isn't the point that he broke the law by attending/approving of/encouraging/organising social gatherings that were against the law that he was instrumental in framing and that he was, at the same time, going on TV stating clearly how important it was to follow these laws?
Isn't the fact that he was then boozing etc simply an extra blot on his disgraceful character?
Is this why the Fail are then having double standards over Starmer drinking a beer and eating a curry? Because they are trying to associate the consumption of alcohol as being the law that was broken?

An interesting piece from the author Joanne Harris on Twitter. She describes the punishment she gave to a boy she caught dropping a crisp packet when a teacher and how this relates to Johnson:

This is exactly how I see Johnson and the supine scum that are his cronies.

As for your comment regarding people dying. We were on holiday in Rhodes in September 2020. Three days in, the Scottish government became the only one of all 4 devolved nations to put Rhodes on the red list. We arrived home on the early hours of Sunday morning and went straight into an unnecessary 14 day quarantine. On the Tuesday morning my wife’s father collapsed and died in his home. My wife wasn’t able to see his body or comfort her mother. Despite a distance if just 15 miles.
We had to get permission to attend the funeral. Not all members of the family were able to attend due to the restrictions in place at the time. They had to watch the service using a laptop.

As you say, it's deliberate deception making it about the cake/booze. Oldest trick in the book and people still fall for it. Never mind that the rules were different when Starmer was at the campaign meeting, he was investigated and found not to have broken the law. That never gets taken into account.
Bottom line is that the PM and No 10 staff were clearly in breach of the laws. BJ then repeatedly lied to Parliament about it. And then you can throw in a sprinkling of very likely collusion with the Met on top.
Senior officials weren't investigated because they didn't return the Met questionnaires. Lolz. It's just ridiculous. Can you imagine any of us breaking a law, only being sent a questionnaire and then the police dropping it if we refused to return the questionnaire?
Most of these issues make us look a bit like a failed democracy at the moment. Crazy times.

I think you'll see that Mail lay off Starmer a wee bit over the beer and curry now that Johnson seems secure.
It was only ever being pushed in order to a) deflect from Johnson and b) neuter Starmer's attacks on Johnson over partygate, which it did to an extent.
Plus it got Starmer to blink first and offer his resignation if he is fines, which would put Labour into total disarray if that is the outcome.

In my opinion the point is that Johnson lied to Parliament about it, which is normally a resigning matter. It doesn't matter if there was cake, curry, beer, or wine at the event. He lied about it because he knew that admitting it would be the end of him and by dragging it out people become numb to it and can convince themselves that 'he only had a bit of cake on his birthday' or 'he just popped in to give a leaving speech'. He is now claiming that he didn't realise that rules were broken which if it were true just makes him completely incompetent, but he knows he lied and everyone else knows he lied but we're stuck in this position because Johnson has surrounded himself with a bunch of other incompetent people who aren't in a position to mount a leadership challenge.

- Boris Johnson decided it was okay for him to go and see a work colleague that was leaving to say his goodbyes.
- At the exact same time, Boris Johnson set rules saying that nobody else could go and see their dying or dead children, parents, friends or relatives to say their goodbyes.
Quite simply, not a single person can be thick enough, when presented with these two facts, to not see that Boris considered him and his cronies to be above the law and better than the rest of us.
The only people who can possibly defend this are people prepared to ignore their own lockdown stories, grievances, morals or intelligence because the Tory party agenda serves their own financial or egotistical issues.
