Crazy scenes at St Etienne, as they get relegated 21:29 - May 29 with 2353 viewsallezlesbleus

How is there no security cordon to prevent the obvious pitch invasion? Part of the ground was already closed due to numerous previous problems.

Strewth! Dozens of flares fired at the tunnel by fans running onto the pitch. Scary stuff. Hope no-ones in a bad way after all that.

It's been going on all season, at a number of clubs, often on the pitch. A number of stands have been closed, including at this match.

Only a matter of time before a flare causes injury. Thankfully, most aspects of hooliganism are mercifully substantially better than they were in the 'bad old days'. This is asking for trouble and there is just no need. It's been on the rise in the UK fairly dramatically since the pandemic. Want to show your support for your team in a colourful way? How do people get flares in to a ground? Aren't they pretty obvious if hidden under clothes?

Can't say I've seen fans try and hurl them at their own players before

They should’ve sung Three Little Birds and applauded the manager instead.

Learn the difference between a flare and a smoke bomb.

And having a bit of pyro doesn’t make you a hooligan

Having flares or smoke bombs at football matches is a criminal offence and rightly so. I would have thought that there should be a consensus that a bomb of any kind would be a really really bad idea. OK, so maybe a nice bath bomb...

Presumably if the stewards have the same attitudes as most fans, there is no genuine desire to seek to prevent flares. There are always more people on here who are prepared to speak up in defence of the use of these devices than criticise it. The problem has been increasing of course, and so it will continue to get worse before it gets better. I imagine public opinion will only turn once there is an injury, which is rather unfortunate.

The reality is that conducting a proper search of every fan entering a stadium in order to try to find flares is impractical so it's really hard to prevent.

Charlton fans were throwing things at the below tier at Portman Road, not knowing (or knowing?) that it included disabled Charlton fans below them
