Queen Elizabeth II. 70 Years The Monarch. 00:14 - Jun 2 with 3302 views | StochesStotasBlewe | I was born in 1960. She has been Head of State for 8 years longer than i've been on planet earth. She has served the nation with dignity, wisdom and been a great ambassador for the UK and Commonwealth during her reign. GSTQ.
| We have no village green, or a shop.
It's very, very quiet.
I can walk to the pub. |

Queen Elizabeth II. 70 Years The Monarch. on 09:23 - Jun 2 by itfcjoe | Incredible to think how long she has been on the throne, we'll never see the likes of it again. Been a fantastic ambassador and figurehead for the country - I'll be enjoying the Jubilee celebrations over the weekend. GSTQ |
Yep, it’s certainly a unique thing for all of us alive today. As you say, none of us will see the like again. I distinctly remember a big thing being made of the Silver Jubilee. I’d have been 5 (nearly 6!) and was living in Gislingham at the time. I can remember making flags in school and we also had stuff going on on the village green. TWTD. I’m not particularly fussed this time round. Possibly a bit of flag fatigue as it’s been corrupted by false patriots over the last 6 years. Possibly I’m a bit more aware that the monarchy is still seen as a symbol of English oppression by some in this part of the world. Also their profligacy seems a bit crude when so many are struggling to put food on the table. She’s undeniably been an excellent servant and ambassador to the country though. And could well be the end of the line on monarchy as we know it (William & Kate’s recent Caribbean trip brought out a response from the host people like we’ve never seen before - the days of overseas tours in front of flag waving, smiling subjects could well be finished).

Queen Elizabeth II. 70 Years The Monarch. on 10:38 - Jun 2 with 949 views | pointofblue | My feeling with the monarchy is purely from a financial point of view - if they bring in more economically to the country then we pay them then let them stay in place. If they cost us more than they bring in then they need to go; in truth it’s not as if the palaces and castle will be destroyed either and they’ll forever be attractions because of their history. Perhaps that’s why Prince Charles is looking to cut down the monarchy; the numbers relating to the above are not in the Royal Family’s favour? The Queen has led this country through good times and bad and, and money alone does not make life necessarily easy. There is a lot of love and respect, and there are a lot of questions to also be answered. There is only so many times ‘sorry’ can be said for treatment and actions by ancestors but there’s a lot of pressure in the present regarding the future.

Dedicate one's whole life to nothing in particular and still have to wait for recognition behind a veritable raft of do-gooders (some do-no-gooders) and sportspeople. Pah! |
The thing is that as a total hypocrite, if she was agreeable to giving me that well deserved knighthood for services to myself and charitable support for the brewing industry or maybe a title (anyways fancied Baron as it sounds slightly wicked and mysterious) I’ll happily support the monarchy. Is that too much to ask? Yet here I am at the bottom of the heap. Grrr

The benefits that having a monarchy produces in terms of tourism is impossible to prove. clearly it attracts some people at the margin, but the impact is hugely exaggerated. How popular is Paris with tourists, for example?

Queen Elizabeth II. 70 Years The Monarch. on 09:53 - Jun 2 by Swansea_Blue | She was classed as a minor in the US courts. Andrew was allegedly ‘introduced’ to her several times, including in the States. I’m not sure whether the minor label refers specifically to Andrew’s interactions with her or is from one of the very many other ‘introductions’ arranged by Maxwell. Either way, it’s a disgusting case of grooming and sex trafficking in which the abusers have received far more protection that the victim. |
Not just "allegedly" if you count victim testimony incorporated in the BBC's 'Maxwell' docu series. Seemed absolutely credible to me.

Queen Elizabeth II. 70 Years The Monarch. on 12:21 - Jun 2 with 853 views | Oldsmoker | I think your post sums up her contribution accurately. I've seen lots of fawning articles showcasing all the marvellous inventions that have happened during her reign. You would almost think that without her, none of those things would have been invented. By the way, all these inventions happened in your lifetime and my lifetime so I think we should claim some credit too. If none of you had cottoned on, these 4 days of holiday and the preparation required to put on the celebrations are a dry run for when Brenda finally pops it. Almost forgot (tugging his forehead) Gawd bless yer ma'am.

Oh so you don’t have to be a nasty horrible right winger to be enjoying the Jubilee and acknowledging her 70 years on the throne then? Good for you mate, I have fond memories of my parents coming down to London ten years ago, a great couple of days of celebrations, despite the weather! The absolute bile and hatred on here has reached new levels towards those with opposing views, the “be kind” types at the forefront.

Basically just name calling and anger from about ten prominent posters who hate everything about where they live and the horrible people that walk amongst them in society if they don’t see the world in exactly the same way. Sad really. I mean I moved but I like coming back! GSTQ

My grandmother died in 1978 aged 90. She used to tell us that, as a girl growing up in London, she saw Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee procession and touched the Queen's hand. There will be children who saw the queen today who, in 90 years time, will tell their great-great-grandchildren.

When you say “led the country” I’m struggling to find many examples of leadership, other than being in the position of HoS, which she’s in by default. I’ve never had much of an interest, so in the spirit of getting involved I’ve been searching today for examples of where she’s made a real difference. What’s going to be her legacy? Maybe the history buffs can help out here, as all I’ve found of any meaning is: - A willingness to cede power to Canada during their patriation in 1977. It’s not clear whether she pushed for this or reacted to an inevitable movement. - Overseeing decolonisation of several countries - again, not clear if she was an instigator or was swept along in something inevitable. - apparently she “helped” pass the Crown Act of 2013, which removed the patriarchal element of royal succession. But this was an act passed through Parliament, so her role is not clear. I can’t find much else. Genuinely, I’m not looking to be critical. 70 years of being the most privileged person in the country is a long time to make some changes and do some good, so there must be plenty more than what I’ve found.

I've still got the Silver Jubilee coin that was handed out to school children in '77. Not worth anything unfortunately as it appears there are loads out there. There was me hoping most people would have lost theirs or thrown them into canals in protest over the years. Watched the parade in either Ipswich or Bury, I can't remember clearly which as I was flitting between the two places at that time.

Magnificent to find your dad's stuff like that. Tells a few extra stories about his life doesn't it and gives a few moments to ponder on. As for your '77 coin, if you could just kindly throw that into a canal that would be great.

Lol. Not sure where the nearest canal is, but we’ve plenty of coastline and shifting sands. It’s been a right trip down memory lane and into the past this week. He and my mum were hoarders, so I’ve got family photos from the late 1800s (no idea who anyone is though!), WWI memorabilia from my great grandad who served on the fleet flagship, the Iron Duke, in WWI under Admiral Jellicoe (I remember him telling me stories when I was a kid of his time in the navy, including action at Jutland). WWII medals and badges from my grandad on my mums side who flew on the Lancasters. Plenty of photos of me as a super cool kid too of course (where did it all go wrong?!). Clearing out a house is a right pain in the butt though.

I was at Boarding School at the time in 1977 and tbh I don’t remember a whole lot about it. There was bunting and stuff, a decent tea for once and though I don’t remember receiving it I do have a Jubilee coin. Sorry about that! In the misses’ mad aunt’s house we did find a pristine souvenir programme for the coronation, which I gave to my mum. She was well into royalty. It’s in my dads house somewhere unless he’s chucked it out. I also have the odd coronation mug for George 5 and Eddy 7. Chipped and worthless, as is the WW1 commemoration mug with Haig and Beatty’s images on it. Ironic as they were both berks. That’s it on the memorabilia front. Total value: zilch. All depends how you see 'privilege'. I'd rather scrub public lavs for 50 years & be in a position to make my own choices as far as possible, than be born into her goldfish bowl public life. Imagine having to smile nicely & be polite to *everybody*, incl Trump, Johnson (every week ffs!) and DaveU when what you're actually itching to do is tell them what you *really* think of them!
