Defensive Midfield.. 00:32 - Jun 2 with 4867 views | BigCommon | With Ball's arrival, along with Morsy, Evans and El Miz (as back up).. Does anyone think we need another DM Fielder? ... In an ideal world with no long term injuries to these players, we look pretty sorted imo... My only concerns are Evans fitness and full recovery, and Morsy's disciplinary record... All squads get stretched at some point in the season.. But do you think we are covered in that position now?... Where does Harper come into the fray..?.. Have to say , Morsy, Ball and Evans, if available for selection, is not too shabby choice for L1 side. Imo.
Defensive Midfield.. on 07:38 - Jun 2 with 3593 views | ColchesterBlue1985 | Once again on paper we already have a decent 20/21 man squad (need 2/3 more in my view) however I am loathed to get too ahead of myself after the excitement of the avalanche of players who were meant to be far too good for league 1 and then went on and did nothing!! What I am liking though is we are getting our business done early, let’s start pre season with the squad we start the season with. Not buying Morsy and Walton until end of august cost us majorly, same mistake won’t be repeated.

Bakinson is available on a free transfer and is on relatively low wages. Surely we should be looking to sign him and he would be higher up the pecking order than Harper? Harper's got a lot to prove IMO. I'm not convinced we shouldn't be getting rid of him too.

Would surprise me if BCFC didn't want a fee for Bakinson. I think it being reported that he is free to leave has been misrepresented as him being available for nothing, although I could be wrong. Seems unlikely him coming back now though with Ball having been signed, Evans playing a similar role and Morsy able to move deeper if required.

Would like to see Harper under McKenna’s coaching. Whilst I agree, he probably wasn’t up to it last season, he was played in a different position / role every time he did play. Pre season under McKenna to see what he thinks of him won’t hurt anybody.

Hot take; I wonder if Evans will be allowed to leave this summer. He's spent the last few months of the season on the sideline with 'little injuries' that seem to be overlapping each other. He is not as driven as Morsy on the pitch, he isn't as aggressive and resolute as Dominic Ball has been for QPR, and I don't think he is mobile enough for a playmaker. I know there job is collect, pass and recycle each game, and he had a strong long pass in his locker. But I don't feel comfortable with Evans collecting the ball in a tight space, his back to the opposition. Widely inaccurate comparison, but you watch someone like Thiago for Liverpool. How quickly he retrieves the ball from the defence, turns and plays his pass. I don't think Evans is 'alert' enough to play like that. You think about how nippy Fraser Alexander and Cam Humphrey's have been for the 23's, I'm not sure Evans is that guy. Like I said, hot take! Would love to know what you guys think

I got the impression that KMc was a big fan so would be a surprise, I think. Ball will clearly expect to play most games so the two of them would seem to be vying for the same position. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

What's the thoughts on the younger lads? Can see Ball and Evans as the deeper midfielders, Morsy and Harper as the box-to-box players, so would El Miz be considered as a back-up at Number 10? (considering we've already got Chaplin and Aluko who can play there, and KMcK will probably be looking for a replacement for Celina)

I got a feeling the likes of El Miz and Harper. might stay in the building for the first half of the season. To help pad out the squad for Pizza cup etc. .And, as emergency back up. Which will give them a chance to prove to KM , in those games, plus in training, whether their development, is keeping pace with the level we require, going forwards.. (Jacksons renaissance , should give hope to any fringe players who get their heads down?). Then possibly loaned out in Jan..... Further up the pitch, I'd like to see Celina back here, with Humphrey in the mix . Giving us, Chapper's, Aluko, Santi, Humphrey as potential AM's... Celina, is more hopeful thinking on my part. But if we keep snapping up decent freebies, there could be enough budget to secure a permanent deal for Santi?.... If Celina is a no go. Then I'd expect an incoming player, that can play through the MF, deep and/or forwards... Have to consider, the likes of El Miz, Harper and even Edwards, were inherited players for KM. Not sure they fit the profile of what he wants/needs.. I'm sure they'll get a chance to prove themselves. But when you look at the kind of players (physicality) that KM has bought in during his time.. Bakinson, Ladapo, Ball, all well over 6 feet tall, even Thomson was 6 ft.. Then, you get a picture of the kind of players in certain positions that KM likes, or thinks is better equipped to get us out of this Division... Be interesting to see who comes in at LWB. The Ball signing came out of nowhere, imo. So, who knows what's in the pipeline at LWB..... Contrary to what a few others have said, I honestly don't mind Ladapo and Jackson as our two main front men... We've got goals in Burns, Chappers and I'd expect Morsy to be chipping in, plus our left side should be much improved and producing... If we can sort our set pieces out, we'll have goals from all over the pitch..

In January McKenna chose to keep El Mizouni around and to send Harper out on loan. Subsequently Harper was wretched for Crewe and El Miz played 21 minutes for us at RWB. Can't see why any of that would've reversed their respective positions in the pecking order. I suspect Harper has an enormous job on his hands to demonstrate he belongs in our squad next season.

I think El Mizouni will move on. Needs to get games and there are clubs keen on him, Tranmere and Leyton Orient among them. Dobra will be looked at in pre-season but same may well be the case.

That was my thinking - if they haven't made an impact at their age, they're going to be competing for places with the likes of Chirewa and Humphreys who you'd hope would have a higher ceiling being a few years younger. Any inside info on Ndaba? Player of the Season for Salford last year, and what I saw of him looked pretty useful getting forward from Left Back, so wonder whether he'll get a chance.

I asked KMc about him as I think he's of a profile he'd like as a centre-half, although maybe also at left-back. Think he'll definitely be involved in pre-season and with a view to being involved in the first team rather than just as part of the wider squad, which I think has been the case in previous years.

BCFC will probably play silly beggars with us over potential transfer out of sour grapes over the whole Mark Ashton situation. Bakinson ain’t that great anyway so I hope we wouldn’t get involved if they decide to be difficult.

Ah. okay. My mistake, I''ve read that wrong. I kind of hoped that we would sign Bakinson. Careless in possession at times, but looked a good player overall to me. But I guess Evans/Ball would be favourites to start ahead of him, so maybe he is surplus to requirements. Depends how much BCFC want for him I suppose.

I think it was reported that way in some places but the original story just said he was free to move on, meaning is available. Agree with your assessment, made bad decisions at times and gave the ball away needlessly too often.

Imo there wasn't much difference between Bakinson and Harper. Both had ability, both could do a solid job on occasions but both would lose the ball more often than getting it to a team mate. I did like how Bakinson tried to get the game moving but spent alot of time trying blind diag balls that just got cut out.

I think it's deceptive to judge them both by how often they gave the ball away. They have similar pass completion rates (79.8% Harper v Bakinson 79.2%) but there's an absolutely huge gulf in terms of involvement. Bakinson played more than twice as many passes per game and recovered the ball for us 3 times as often. That's the difference between a player that's a decent (if flawed) competitor in this league, who is up to the pace of the game and a player who just isn't anywhere near it.

Harper definitely played better further up the pitch, except for the very first game in which he looked the real deal holding. Not sure what happened to him, maybe just lost confidence being in and out and moved all about. Shame really. The other conundrum is Edwards, who could do a job attacking from wide or central, and is defensively sound. Loads of ability there and would be brilliant at this level if crossing can be trained.
