Labour's (non) position on Europe 12:35 - Jun 8 with 619 viewsSwansea_Blue

Good grief, this is a painful watch from Cooper. A complete reticence to acknowledge a problem, let alone address it. The responses wouldn't sound out of place coming from an ERG Tory.

The elephant in the room isn't getting any smaller is it? At some point Labour have got to decide what they stand for. For too long on this issue (under Corbyn & Starmer), they've tried to hedge their bets on Europe and I wonder how much support they've lost as a result. Surely it must be getting to the point where Brexit is safer ground - polls show <20% think it's going well and even the majority of Tory and leave voters don't think it's going well.

It is a dodge, but I'm not quite sure what people are expecting from Labour and Europe. They know full well if there is too much noise around the subject it will just leave the door open for Boris to run with a 'Keep Brexit Done' message for the next election (should he get that far). His only hope is to stoke up the old arguments again.

Labour will just spend the next 2 years avoiding any commitments to a single market and explore it once they get in.

The problem they have is that, as Tobias Ellwood showed this week, any hint of support for single market membership is met by a chorus of 'betraying Brexit'., Given culture war issues are all this rump of a government has left that would be ideal for them.

What Labour should be doing IMO is articulating more strongly why Brexit didn't need to entail the mess the government have made of it and that it can be improved. Ultimately that leads back to membership of the single market but that can't be spoken yet.
