We (Ipswich Town) share an English football record with Burnley and Crystal Palace of four.

What is that record?

Unless I'm missing something obvious, haven't we only played the Blunts once in the POs? 1997?

Nope.

But I think you are right in that we have four - '61, '68, '92 and 2000.

Second Tier promotions? Can't be that, loads of teams have been promoted more than us.

Yeah you're right!

No idea why I thought Sheffield United was twice.

Can't believe that having lost on away goals to the Blunts and then on away goals Bolton we'd have also lost on away goals again to Bolton if it wasn't for the rule change!

Could be. We’ve had 4 managers who’ve also managed a national team. Ramsay, Robson, Burley and McCarthy.

Nope. It's to do with a specific competition.

I think that’s right. Most losses in semi without ever making the final.

i reckon if you add on "without ever reaching the final" that sounds about right (as i'm sure some of the big clubs have lost more than 4).

edit, Beckets' done me.

Yep think you & Beckets are right

We have always played the first leg at Portman Road strangely enough. Even went into the second leg 1-0 up on three of those occasions.

Even though the Norwich one still hurts till this day I still cannot believe we blew the 2nd leg at Birmingham.

Yep, between you you all got it.

Burnley, Palace and Town have all reached the League Cup semi-finals on four occasions without ever making the final.

Burnley: 1960/61 (first season), 1968/69, 1982/83 and 2008/09

Crystal Palace: 1992/93, 1994/95, 2000/01 and 2011/12

Ipswich Town: 1981/82, 1984/85, 2000/01 and 2010/11

The thing is, it's not really worth bothering with is it?

Tin-plate Mickey Mouse thing often won by teams from the Second Division, playing teams from the Fourth Division. Sure, it's worth a run to get some practice into the legs of your reserve players etc., but your responsible club won't then put its fans through the bother and expense of a trip to London for the final, and will therefore often throw the semi.

Surprisingly no team outside the top flight has won the League Cup since the Premier League was formed in 1992.

The last second division winners was Sheffield Wednesday in 1991.

For the last decade it's been suffering from the opposite problem. In the last 9 years it's been won only by 4 clubs, all of whom finished in the Premier League top six this past season. So it doesn't even serve the purpose of giving the smaller teams something realistic to aim for. It's won with ease by teams who really don't care about and have no real use for it apart from keeping their legion of squad players fit and happy. Another tool for the top few. As I see it, its only function is to stop the FA Cup being seen as the joke competition.

I'm kind of referring to an earlier era for a not entirely undisingenous reason!
