Have a trip on a gondola and sing the Cornetto song.

That's never been done before.

Marvelous place. Horrendously busy in the main St Mark's square (although it is worth a look, and the views from the top of the tower are worth the queues). A gondola ride is probably a must, but I can't say I particularly enjoyed it - horrendously commercial, as you'd expect.

It's very easy to escape the crowds though as it's such a compact area. We were based in Campo Santa Margherita, on the west side of Grand Canal, and it was pretty quiet even in mid-summer. But any of the little squares away from St Mark's will have plenty of small cafe's and bars.

We just strolled and chilled. That seemed as good a way as any to enjoy the place, and less stressful than queuing all the time.

Jump on a water taxi, visit the Lido for beach action. Murano island also worth a visit to see the glass workshops.

and if you want a gondola experience, you can take a 'locals gondola' ride from one side of the grand canal to the other, costs a couple of euro rather than the 30 min tourist rip off.

Lido is a good shout, but you may need a mortgage to but a coffee

Get a copy of Donna Leon's 'A Question of Belief' and then use the map at the front to trace the routes of the detective, victim and murderer around the city. Well, that's what I am going to do next time I am in Venice.

See also Barcelona and 'The Shadow of the Wind'...

If modern art is your thing then the gugenheim

Don't sit at cafes in the main square or any really touristy spots, the coffee will be reasonable but the price for the view won't be.

If you can see some glass blowing that's v impressive

And whilst yes it is touristy and overpriced a trip on a Gondella has to be done

Forget water taxis - you'll need a mortgage to pay for one. Hop on any Vaporetto heading to Lido S.M.E. (line 1, 5.1, 5.2, 6, 8, 10 or 11 depending on where you're coming from). Walk down the Granviale, cross the roundabout at the bottom and go to the beach (on the Adriatic!)

Our favourite day out is to take the Line 12 vaporetto from Fondamente Nove (or from Murano Faro) out to the remote islands of Mazzorbo, Burano and Torcello.

And a vote for the Lido from me. Love that part of the world. Camped for a couple of weeks at a place called Bibione decades ago and had a totally mental time there.

Go to Little Venice in London instead. Much cheaper, doesn’t smell quite so bad and you won’t get ripped off at the nearby cafes and Italian restaurants.

Nearly as many locals as tourists having a drink on Campo Santo Stefano when we went, and we weren't ripped off.

Taverna San Trovaso, old-fashioned, basic food, fair prices, we liked it. Best to book, either when passing or if you are going on the first night then beforehand by email. https://www.tavernasantrovaso.it/en/

The area of Castello just east of St Marks is just as lovely as others but seemed a bit quieter so would recommend.

Ca' Pesaro is a nice gallery, too.

Quick note to say thanks for everyone for advice, had an icnredible weekend in Venice - an absolutely stunning place and just so unique.

We ended up doing as a lot suggested - pounding the streets (77k steps across 3 days!), staying off beaten track, going across to Burano for an afternoon, gondola ride and just chilling with good food and Aperol Spritz.

Didn't make the Lido - maybe next time

Had a fantastic weeks holiday staying in Lido di Jesolo a few years ago. We went into Venice for two days. Went very early, the ferry arrived at St Marks Square around 7.30am. This was in late September, everywhere was relatively peaceful until the afternoon. We found some lovely inexpensive cafes in little squares away from the main attractions. We walked miles on the first day, but did a lot of ferry hopping on the second. It was a lovely week, we also did a fabulous day trip to Verona & Lake Garda. One of my nicest weeks away anywhere looking back. Took some fantastic photos. So much to see & do even if you miss the main attractions. You’ll enjoy I’m sure.
