She never could sing well enough to carry the reputation she had. She was a triumph of ambition over talent who made sure she’s get too billing by marrying the boss. Far better singers than her got sidelined at Motown as a result, including her band mates Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard, Gladys Knight, Martha Reeves, all of whom were much more talented than Ross |  | | |

no idea how old the pet shop boys are, althou i know they had hits in the 80s . i agree she was crap but can't believe people thought she would be even ok.
even van morrison who i go to see whenever i can, voice is nowhere what it was.

I misread your post as "singers in their 60's" which is totally different to the response I gave you.
Still artist dependent though, she is only 10 years older than Tennent.

Berry Gordy thought Florence Ballard sounded to black to crack the white audience. He also thought she was a little to ‘plump’.

I love the PSB but in fairness Neil Tennant never had a great voice to lose. His nasally whine absolutely suits the music he performs. But he’d never have hit the heights of Ain’t No Mountain High Enough or Good Morning Heartache from Lady Sings The BLues.
It’s like comparing apples with oranges.
Performers like Tennant, Phil Oakey and others from that genre were never great singers as such so won’t suffer from a declining singing voice due to age.
As I say, nothing against the PSB. Have been on board with them since ‘Please’ in 1986. I even used to buy their budget remix albums. [Post edited 3 Jul 2022 16:39]

Rod Stewart was one of the finest white blues singers of his generation. He can't perform his songs with any credibility at all as his voice has deteriorated.
Neil Tennant is not, and has never been a singer on the classic sense. He will probably sound the same when he 99 years old. He's not attempting to hit notes. It's a monotone nasally whine which is used to very good effect.
So when you and somebody else were comparing Ross and Tennant's ages, and their ability to still perform it was like comparing apples with oranges. | |

I'd say it was genre dependent rather than artist.
