Old. Well old. But yes, we had proper summers in those days. And winters too. And the springs, proper springs with proper spring stuff. Don't even start about those autumns we had...

Weather heads up. on 14:42 - Jul 13 by N2_Blue | Very good point Not enough of the general populace are going to make individual sacrifices and changes to their ways whilst the wealthy and privileged carry on as they are. |
Just a point, BP and others have gone really put of their way to try and shift the narrative onto being individuals are at fault rather than the system. It's unfortunately worked tremendously well. I might be wrong but I think BP spent more on the "what's your carbon footprint" campaigns than they have on green energy. They aren't the first industry to do this either.

It does work, as it does in politics. Get people blaming each other and it takes the heat off. Although it can be frustrating getting people to listen as I know myself from the Stop E$$o campaign of the late 90s/early 2000s. The Bush admin had refused to get involved with the Kyoto Protocol and Esso's no small part in being a major influence. Greenpeace were trying to raise awareness but people generally weren't interested.

Do all this and then obviously pay off politicians to try and scrap legislation that will force them to confront the obvious issues. It's exactly like what happened with tobacco. They all knew and they covered up the harm as long as they possibly could. Meanwhile, two of the candidates running to be next PM have said they'd scrap the 2050 net zero target. Trying to do the bare minimum and still they want it scrapped. One of them has a decent chance of winning. Feck em both.

I think it's two-fold though, difficult for companies to charge more for greener energy if consumers will ignore that on the basis of price. You can see that in the Tory hatred of greenery even though the UK Renewable Obligation (and similar subsidies elsewhere) have brought down the cost of wind and solar energy enormously. Purely attributing behaviour patterns to companies isn't entirely an fair reflection of the last 70 years IMO. That's not to excuse BP who did a load of 'Beyond Petroleum' fluff a good 15 years ago before rolling back on it completely. And that's before touching on the American Enterprise Institute and the like in the US. I still find it hard from a logical perspective how the US brought in loads of fuel efficiency standards for cars after the oil crises of the 70s before the car industry decided that trucks built like light tanks was a way to abrogate those standards, in turn increasing reliance on oil which makes current petrol prices so painful. (I don't think I've contradicted my earlier point here, It was clearly lead by corporate lobbyists but found a very willing audience with consumers).

we were building alton water reservoir at that time. 75 summer we were towing cement tankers through the mud then 76 summer you couldn't see much of the site due to dust. mind you living through the winter of 63 was a lot worse

The world will burn up unfortunately. There is absolutely no way governments can do what i needed to tackle climate change and take the necessary actions to get to carbon zero. Its all soundbites. Only when millions die in Western countries as a result of catastrophic 'natural' events might actual action happen, but even then its doubtful and we'll probably by then just decide its inevitable and something we have to live with.

We're getting into a much more reliable time range for these forecasts now at 5 or 6 days, aren't we. I wonder if the 'unusualness' of the plume event introduces any more uncertainty into the outcome, not much I suspect? Seems like it's very likely to happen now, so protect your old folk and your animal friends. If I see anyone leaving a dog in a car whilst they "pop into the shop for just a minute", I promise that I will smash the window.

Apparently the detail is all in the course of the Bay of Biscay low! If anything the severity and extent of the heat seems to be increasing again as we get closer.

Just remember that Teslas have a 'dog mode' which keeps the aircon on whilst you pop to the shop... But any other type of car, yeah, smash the window!

Yes, if you're planning on making children with it, better get it done sharpish. Or possibly better not.

That sounds like fun. Maybe it'll be easier to just work all night and be so tired to sleep the next day. What do the modals say for London day time on Mon and Tues?

Yes, it's the overnight temperatures that might make it really uncomfortable. I saw some place on the Portuguese coast recorded 46.7C or similar. Edit: Twitter is back so I can add a link: [Post edited 14 Jul 2022 13:50]

If you're going to work through the night you're going to need a decent headtorch. All a bit concerning I have to say. My little lawn has shrunk and has crevices in it that go down several inches it's so dry.
