Things to do in Budapest? 11:30 - Jul 15 with 1577 viewsThisIsMyUsername

Going next week Tues-Sun and want to fill my time as much as possible.

Cheaper (or free) the better. All suggestions welcome :)

I WILL be going to the shooting range where you can fire loads of weapons from the Second World War. Costs £100 but will be worth it.

Those baths are amazing - if you do nothing else, spend some time there.

This is a short bus ride away if you have time. Worth a visit, especially given the current events from the east.

Its actually 2 cities, Buda and Pest and you can get the funicular up the hill and visit the castle

The tour of the Hungarian Parliament is worth doing & you also get to see The Holy Crown of Hungary, also known as the Crown of Saint Stephen, named in honour of Saint Stephen I of Hungary. This was the coronation crown used by the Kingdom of Hungary for most of its existence; kings have been crowned with it since the twelfth century.

Def. go to the thermal baths; you can play chess while you soak if that’s up your street.
Also memento park, loads of communist era statues. They used to sell ‘Best of communism’ CDs as well.

Take a walk up (or a taxi) to the Liberty Statue at the top of the hill and watch the sunrise. Stunning.

Budapest's courtyard bars are well worth a visit, discrete gems.

Definitely the thermal baths. Gellert on the other side of the Danube on the Pest side is another good one, Szechenyi is fun and central.

Beautiful city, shame about the grim Hungarian government.

In terms of cheaper, it is quite easy to generally walk around and sightsee. You get good views of a lot of things along the river.

I went to Széchenyi Thermal Bath. Whilst it is pretty, I mainly stuck to the outside part as the inside was rather rundown and smelly. Despite not using the inside, it was still enjoyable. I'd recommend getting there early on a hot day.

The castle district is nice. I can't remember if it cost to go in, but if it did it was inexpensive.

Food is good, well worth eating out as it is quite different to other foods. Even an expensive local place was quite affordable.

But, as previously mentioned, I'd you like walking around, and checking things out visually or with a camera, then you can kill a lot of time.

Fisherman's Bastion is great, plus a boat on the Danube.

Like most post-war communist countries Hungary didn’t stint on the war memorials - and Budapests is something of a classic. Thé mémorial to thousands massacred on the banks of the Danube is Aldo commemorated rather memorably by some metal shoes you walk past - another startling reminder that a war occurred in Europe between 1940 and 1944

Food wise - I’d be tempted by the cold sour cherry soup and the hot carp soup. Don’t do for goulash - there’s no ghouls in it at all.

Had a great time. Met some cool people and made some new friends.

Things I did include:

- Holocaust Museum
- House of Terror
- Rudas baths*
- Visit up to the castle and Fisherman's Bastion/Matthias Church
- Celeritas Shooting Club
- The evening music and lights fountain display on Margaret Island.

Unfortunately it was so hot; high 30s, and in reality hotter than that on street level. Walking was therefore hard work. Used Bolt a lot of times as I didn't realise how big the city was.

Food-wise I went to Okay Italia every night...

* I went in both the thermal baths side, and the modern side with a swimming pool. I didn't realise it was 'Men only' day in the thermal baths and was accosted more than once.

The Grand Prix is meant to be very good, if you are into those kinds of things and are lucky with your dates...
