Liz Truss is almost certainly our next Prime Minister. 15:26 - Jul 19 with 3714 viewstractordownsouth

She’s almost caught up the gap to Mordaunt in the penultimate round and now there are only Badenoch’s votes to distribute. Given that Badenoch has attacked Mordaunt over culture issues surely the bulk of her support will now go to Truss, and I can’t see Badenoch MPs like Tom Hunt or Lee Anderson not going for someone from the right of the party.

That then takes us to the membership vote. With almost all the pollsters, Truss beats Sunak comfortably. Although it’s an unweighted sample, Conservative Home regularly puts her near the top of their cabinet approval rankings, with Sunak near the bottom. Sunak will no doubt try and maximise the number of debates because that’s his strong point but his polling with the membership is so dire and the fact he won’t promise tax cuts doesn’t help his cause. But given how much of a poor performer she is in the media, if I were running Truss’s campaign I would limit 1 v 1s with Sunak, which I imagine they will try to do.

Good news for domestic cheese producers.

Plus, she is thick as pigsh1t, woefully incompetent and was happy to defend the openly bigoted, corrupt, incompetent criminal who was happy to promote sex abusers that is Johnson to the last.

Spot on. A friend of mine at MoJ worked with her while she was there. Desperately thick.

An absolute asset to the Labour Government in waiting. They need not say a word. They don’t need a manifesto. Say nothing. Just hand her a shovel and she will dig their graves without even knowing what she is doing.

Ahhh, the comfort of the opposition benches for the rump of 150 awaits and the civil war that’ll follow. They can’t wait. They did it when Blair swept them away and it’s that time again.

I really don’t see the Truss hype. I don’t think Sunak would be an electoral asset to the Tories but at least he can speak eloquently. I think a Truss General Election campaign would make Theresa May look genuinely strong and stable.

Sunak is intelligent & articulate & looks head & shoulders above the others as a potential PM. However, he has 2 problems. 1, he is very rich (he & his wife are worth over £700m). This will turn off plenty of voters as they will think that someone as wealthy & who had a privileged background won't understand the problems of ordinary people. His tax affairs will also be used to generate clickbait headlines, as with all rich citizens. 2, his ethnicity. Many people won't have the slightest problem with this, but a large number of voters are still prejudiced, especially in the so-called "red wall" constituencies. So he will find winning the next General election a huge challenge.

I think his biggest problems are actually that (3) he has presided over an economy which is utterly screwed; and (4) He stood shoulder to shoulder with Boris and didnt speak out until he was certain that the wind had changed and it would be damaging not to do so. He and Truss are about as tarnished with Boris' failings as they could possibly be.

Nothing that I can see.

But it busts the myth that ethnicity would play a part in whether a candidate is elected as Tory leader or not.

In a poll of members, Badenoch came out in top against every one of her opponents.

Yeah I don't think there is much in ethnicity, which is good. Sunak was obviously very popular during the COVID period.

Unfortunately I imagine she is popular for her rather hateful personality, or at least that was the impression I got whenever she spoke.

Like Badenoch, she is saying what a significant proportion of the membership want to hear.

The fact it is counter to what is good for the country doesn’t matter to them.

It’s why she dressed like Thatcher in that debate. It wasn’t a mistake. And probably confuses the retired army majors in their 80s that she is still alive so will vote for her.

Well they can’t vote for Badenoch as she didn’t go through. If the choice is between Sunak and Truss then it won’t come down ti ethnicity. It will come down ti who is perceived to be a continuation of Boris Johnson and who is perceived to have stabbed him in the back.

So If Truss as the Johnson continuation wins then you have a Party membership at loggerheads with its elected MPs. Now that sounds familiar!!

Certainly popular during the pandemic when he was handing the money out. Less popular I suspect when he was asking people to pay it back. He is I think the most capable of the candidates remaining but it is rather like the “one eyed man in the land of the blind” syndrome.

No way will it be Liz Truss. She hasn't even got past Penny Mordaunt yet.

The race all along has been Rishi Sunak + A.N. Other token candidate.

Not necessarily

You don’t really know if the current voters actually support the candidate they are voting for.

And you don’t know if it will go to the blue rinse brigade - IF Sunak’s support is genuine they may well stop it going to the members ‘for the sake of the party’
