Liz Truss is almost certainly our next Prime Minister. 15:26 - Jul 19 with 3712 views | tractordownsouth | She’s almost caught up the gap to Mordaunt in the penultimate round and now there are only Badenoch’s votes to distribute. Given that Badenoch has attacked Mordaunt over culture issues surely the bulk of her support will now go to Truss, and I can’t see Badenoch MPs like Tom Hunt or Lee Anderson not going for someone from the right of the party. That then takes us to the membership vote. With almost all the pollsters, Truss beats Sunak comfortably. Although it’s an unweighted sample, Conservative Home regularly puts her near the top of their cabinet approval rankings, with Sunak near the bottom. Sunak will no doubt try and maximise the number of debates because that’s his strong point but his polling with the membership is so dire and the fact he won’t promise tax cuts doesn’t help his cause. But given how much of a poor performer she is in the media, if I were running Truss’s campaign I would limit 1 v 1s with Sunak, which I imagine they will try to do. Good news for domestic cheese producers.

For all of his faults that is pretty much down to David Cameron. Either way the Tories are about to have either our third woman Prime Minister or our second from a BAME background. edit. I saw this posted yesterday which may be a topic for debate: "Lots of people asking why the Conservatives have done diversity so well. It’s because unlike the Left, we don’t tell women or people of colour what to think, we ask them about their ideas". [Post edited 20 Jul 2022 11:17]

It may well end up being Truss as I think Sunak has lost the party. If that's the case it is a terrible choice. If Mordaunt slips through that is the worst result for the opposition as she could possibly bring about a "reset". Knowing how stupid the Tories are they'll engineer Mordaunt out of the race.
