LWB Cars - experiences? 13:50 - Jul 29 with 908 viewsZx1988

I'm in the market for a used car and have found myself extremely taken with a LWB Jaguar XJ. It ticks all the boxes, but comes in at about 5.2m in length.

Has anyone got any experience of owning LWB cars like this? Is the length manageable, or is it just going to be a right old faff that'll make me regret ever buying the thing?

Edit: And before anyone makes the obvious observation, yes I've asked Leif for his thoughts on the matter

Have you checked out RWB Cars? They tend to score more in the most recent comparison tables I've seen. Although LWB Cars have a new fleet, so should perform better over the next year, compared to the previous.

I read a few other reviews and some people suggest that the Manager of LWB Cars didn't need or want to upgrade their fleet, as it allowed RWB Cars to perform better. I personally didn't see how this was connected, as they are two different car companies.

Does it come with a camera or rear sensors for parking? If it does - all good.

I've got an XF which is only around 25cm shorter and the same width(ish) as the XJ. It really is no problem at all - don't worry about the size!

Just a heads up, the diesel is no good if doing short journeys. If the DPF fails to regenerate properly or is cut short then diesel fuel can end up diluting the engine oil causing bearing failure. The bearings cannot be bought from Jaguar so it's a replacement engine!

If going for an early 6 speed auto make sure it's been serviced (with proper ZF Lifeguard fluid) before 80k. Jaguar say they're sealed for life so don't need the oil exchanged, ZF (the manufacturer) says they need doing between 70k-100k. There are places fairly locally that can service the gearbox if you're buying one that needs doing - it's around £600. The later 8 speed auto is a peach and Jaguar changed their service policy for this to 10 years.

Also, the XJ is not rated for towing.

Well it can be a nightmare, kerbing the car will be a constant nightmare, the subsequent 3 point turns you will need to do to get it out of car parks via the barriers / high kerb / tight exit space can be annoying after a while. Has it got 4 wheel steer? That’s critical for LWB

Thanks, Marvellous, thats... erm... marvellous!

I hadn't even considered the DPF side of things. I've had my diesel Civic Tourer for a little over 18mths now with no DPF issues, so I'm assuming that I do enough meaty journeys for there to be little risk of an issue.

Looking at my monthly mileage claim, I've done an average of 43mi a day this month, with a high of 115 and a low of 10, so I'd assume that should be enough to keep everything happy, especially as I tend to do one or two trips a week where I'm at 50mph+ for a good 30mins or more. And then, of course, during the season there'll be 23+ round trips from Norwich to PR...

Sounds like you should have the DPF covered then. Just keep an eye on the oil level, if it increases then get an oil change done ASAP!

They're a gorgeous car, for me a real head-turner. They are by far the prettiest limo on the road plus, if you read the reviews, they're the best to drive. I've found build quality to be at least as good as the Germans and running costs to be very reasonable (taking the "premium" badge in to consideration). I would've bought an XJ had it not been for the need to tow.

There is a Land Rover specialist in Halesworth, HWB, that should be able to look after it for you if you want to steer clear of the main dealer costs.

Hope the new fleet is better than the ones from recent years.

I remember when you Kenlock some of them which was a concern as they cost a pretty Penney. They really were Garbutt and not Coulson

My hobbies include being quiet during trips, clapping with songs, and diabetes.
