Presumably was a genuine slip up, rather than equating Hillsborough with hooliganism.

Indeed. A rather ridiculous OTT reaction. Especially from the Liverpool MP calling for Tyler to be sacked

Indeed. It appears to have been clumsily worded.

It was a description of the challenges football faced in 92, including Hillsborough and hooliganism.

The idea that a respected journalist would make a claim on national radio that Hillsborough was caused by hooliganism is far fetched.

It's obvious what he meant. Feel sorry for him.

Interesting that they remain remarkably quiet about the hooliganism of Liverpool fans that led to 39 deaths at Hysel, which led to English clubs being expelled from European competitions for six seasons.

14 Liverpool fans were jailed for manslaughter.

Edit - presume this is an attempt to wind people up, bit I'll bite.

Interesting that who remains quiet about Heysel?

Probably because the truth was outed straight away with Heysel. Guilt was admitted, apologies made, punishments set. With Hillsbrough, there was a systemic cover up where the finger of blame was continuously pointed at the fans to deflect failures from those in authority.

The reaction to Martin Tyler’s comments are over the top but Hillsbrough is understandably very fragile so it will receive heightened responses.

Sorry, was poorly worded and not intended to offend.

What went on at Hillsborough was tragic and the cover up and blaming of Liverpool fans a disgrace.

I do though find that the moral high ground that some Liverpool MPs appear to have taken on fan behaviour sits uneasily alongside what happened at Heysel just four years earlier. A more dignified response than calling for the sacking of an experienced journalist for misspeaking would have been better imv.

I saw an old YouTube clip of the game recently.

Was interested to see the amount of Liverpool Union jacks in the crowd.

Utter overreaction.

Even taking the quote as-said by Tyler, and as printed by The Guardian, the meaning changes entirely with the addition of a couple of commas:

“You have got to remember football was in a bit of a crisis at that time. We weren’t that long after Hillsborough and other[,] hooligan-related[,] issues as well, so it was very much a difficult time for the game generally.”

Quite. He probably was in his own mind just listing issues during a difficult time in football, not linking them together.

FFS. Tyler is one of the good guys.

In that this was spoken not written, the pattern of English should be very easy to discern regarding whether the "and" was a linking or a listing "and" - not that innocence would necessarily save you in a climate of anger/ignorance.
