This is the biggest threat to our economy and stability we have seen for a generation, unfortunately our government seem content to fiddle while Rome burns.

It’s time for Labour.

Whilst I have about as much time for the Tories as our feathered foes up the road, what are Labour suggesting as an alternative?

1. Slash VAT from bills
2. Invest in long term renewable energy
3. Windfall tax on energy profits

Some other interesting bits from John Ashworth, like top up everyone who has a pre paid meter £20 a fortnight(may have been week?) so that money isn't given in one big hit, but it helps keep the lights on for those in most need

The only difference from the Tories is the woolly "invest in long-term renewable energy".

How do they plan on doing that when there is no plan for public ownership? Whose renewable energy will they invest in? Or do you mean they'll subsidise the energy companies to no doubt give even more money to shareholders?

The difference is they are actually trying to get the Tories to tackle it at the moment, like they did the windfall tax - but Boris Johnson is AWOL and the 2 leadership candidates are more interested in their speaking tour to see who can be the biggest bastard to actually worry about the here and now.

Everything becomes a 'but Labour' now, when the Tories are getting away with murder

That still doesn't answer my post nor qualify as a difference.

'Political manoeuvres' - you do realise they are the opposition? What policies do you expect them to be enable to enact when up against an 80 seat majority.

The windfall is the only thing the Tories have done about this energy crisis and was down to supreme pressure from Labour, or were they just on 'manoeuvres' then as well?

Supreme pressure? LOL It was small beer and an easy thing to outflank Labour on.

The energy and connected cost of living crisis need an actual plan that doesn't mean the taxpayers continue to prop up flawed, profit-crazy markets as well as pick up the social cost.

Labour aren't even slowing down the money being hoovered upwards. They're just saying we should pay for it out of the public purse.

It's really interesting to see the number of people who haven't cottoned on yet to the fact that you are an SNP supporter and are equally happy to trash any of the "English" parties!

So, what would Sturgeon be doing about this right now if Scotland were independent?

The sensible policy would be to legally mandate a % of gross income (to avoid any creative accounting/offsets etc) that UK Headquartered oil and gas firms invest in renewables. Thus to avoid the taxpayer footing the bill with subsidies.

Nationalisation whilst popular, isn’t going to solve the energy crisis with the Natural Gas Index currently 4* higher than 2020. In the short term we need the VAT removed - that would instantly shed our bill (and Boris promised with Brexit haha!). Renewables and nuclear is what is needed to ween ourselves off volatile fossil fuel prices, and perhaps some means tested subsidies for home insulation.

People want to heat their homes now, this winter, so you can take the p155 but there is a huge problem happening now.

The long term is obviously important, but building new nuclear stations and investing in renewables is going to make fúck all difference to those struggling now.

DK can 'but Labour' everything and describe it as a political manoeuvring, but there is one part trying to focus on the cost of living, and one party not giving 2 tosses about it

Problem is VAT is only 5%. It won't make a difference to those most under threat.

It needs a much bigger response and we won't get it from Truss.

Ha! You (and Starmer’s Labour) have been absolutely nowhere on the cost of living crisis that’s been punishing millions of men, women and children for years.

Now it’s affecting you, you’re championing a party that wants to give you money back but with no change to the underlying status quo that will continue to punish huge swathes of society.

Pretty close, right?

'Starmer's Labour' have been just that for 2 years after handing the previous lot handed the Tories an 80 seat majority - ring any bells?

And it is utter bóllocks to suggest the previous version of the Labour party, the one who actually won elections and the like, didn't make any change to the underlying status quo of the country.

Just compare what happened between 1997 and 2010, and then 2010 to 2022 when you carry on with your 'all the same' schtick.

I've been 'championing' the Labour party for a number of years now, including under Corbyn even though I never liked the bloke and think he lacked credibility which was shown to be the case in 2019, disastrously so.

Your posting history suggests otherwise. But I suppose today’s centrists are yesterday’s right-wingers. Plus the Labour Party you wax lyrical about is/was centre-right.

Either way, a cost of living crisis is nothing new for many millions. They call that “life”. So we can and should go much further than the weak stuff being proposed by Labour and the Tories, wouldn’t you agree?

There is an urgent need to sort something, and I'll take the labour record over the Tory record in helping those most in need whilst in Govt, by every available measure.

They'll never go far enough for some, but at least the direction of travel is right and what they did to the early years, education etc has been totally undone for what? Nothing.

Eh? The direction of travel is still right.

Even New Labour only took a stand on the basis of global growth and deregulated markets that brought in more money and a higher tax take. When the recession hit and austerity came in (Labour themselves said they would also go for austerity measures) any advances were practically wiped out.

So if you think the Labour right will really step in to help poor people in a recession then you’ve clearly not been watching them very closely. For starters, they’re already saying that they see growth as the way to generate more funds, when clearly higher taxes is the answer.

That and probably also using public borrowing to invest in society rather than prop up profits and share prices.
