train across country from Ipswich, looked to see if I could get back via London - and while I think it was possible to get to the capital, no way to make last train out of LST - so staying in a cheap hotel in Nottingham

When I had a look a few days ago, it was possible via New Street but not getting back to London until after 1.
Burton - New St: 22:21 - 23:01
New St - Euston: 23:10 - 01:12
Given I'm at Lord's on the Thursday that's a bit much for a Tuesday night game - and obviously at the moment it relies on trains not being cancelled which Avanti are doing an awful lot at the moment.
I did do a similarly tight connection the year we played them at Easter, last train out of New Street on Good Friday wasn't exactly a religious experience but it's achievable. |  |

Last two times ive been, I've parked at the station car park which works as you expect.
Also across from the ground some industrial estate managed to get away quite quick. |  |
