To be honest, I don't think the car industry has very good long term-prospects in this country following Brexit, especially with the move to electric vehicles, but that's not to say all plants will close in the immediate future because there are probably practical and financial reasons for keeping them open. But it's difficult to see us ever being in the same situation as in the 80s when we attracted Japanese manufacturers because of being a member of the EC. Incidentally, car production in the UK is currently 50% below pre-Covid levels when the fall in the EU is only about 30%. Semi-conductor problems etc are clearly playing a part but it suggests that there are other issues at stake in the UK which are unique to the UK. [Post edited 1 Dec 2022 14:36]

Your post is one of many now regularly spewed out by brexiters. Based on their having some irrational hatred of foreigners, migrants, blacks, muslims etc. That has meant them having to stick doggedly to the brexit line. Which requires them to desperately cling to any supposed good news (or not as bad as feared).
The evidence is there, in the figures released. Far from some unicorn packed utopia the UK is losing business like a tyre with a slow puncture.
The borders have not been 'reclaimed' as there are more people arriving on boats than before and now since brexit the UK is unable to return them
Checks are not being made on imports. The lack of staff recruitment and training, the lack of infrastructure suggests the thought is they will not be used, so why bother.
Less than a third now think it was a good idea. A figure that runs parallel with UK business disappearing.

Proper 'ah but' stuff this. Brexit has been a disaster, the immense nature of which has been masked by Covid and Ukraine. Leading Brexiteers have largely kept quiet and avoided the subject as much as possible as a consequence. Putting a to$$er like Rees-Smugg into government as Minister for Brexit Opportunities and then hearing naff all from him for 12-18 months is the most obvious example of this. As some else has pointed out, there wiil always be some investment coming in but the balance of plusses and minuses as a result of Brexit is clear for all to see. Me, I'm still waiting for the £350 million per week NHS Brexit bonus. Plenty there to fund a decent pay rise for the nurses I reckon! There are ciirca 300,000 nurses working in the NHS. Award them each an extra £100 per week and that's £30 million a week, less than 10% of Johnson's claim plastered on his Blunderbus. A nice 5k a year for them all and a little nod to all they do for each and everyone of us.

But the graph zooms on a 1 year period when fluctuation needs to be measured in multiple years, plus the improvement is a factor of 1 when the decline over a 20 year period is a factor of 1,000.
It's a bit like throwing a £50 note in the bin because you found a quid down the back of your sofa. I often wondered when I was younger and first read 1984 how anyone would be stupid enough to look at evidence/memory and genuinely believe Chocolate rations had increased. 80% of cars will be produced in China within 10 years, it's a lot easier to produce electric cars and labour is so much cheaper in China. It's irrelevant how much subsidies other country give, electric cars are a big leveler in the car industry and the cheap labour costs in China will undercut all other car producing countries. You'll have some high end car producers in Europe producing very low volume but the mass market will be filled entirely with cars produced in China. |  | | |
